MLB Betting and Weekend Analysis: Red Sox and Yankees Pitchers

This Sunday, the 2022 MLB draft will get underway. Unlike the NFL or the NBA drafts, though, the MLB draft is more of a long-term proposition. It is very unusual for a player to come out of the draft and contribute quickly, because baseball is a more difficult sport. We see teenagers come right into the pro basketball ranks and begin contributing, and college players often join the NFL and become stars immediately. Baseball takes years of learning in the minor leagues for almost all players. Before Sunday, though, there is some baseball to play on the field, so let’s look at the best series for your MLB betting this weekend.

MLB News: Top Betting Series for the Weekend
Boston Red Sox at N.Y. Yankees (Friday-Sunday)

Friday, July 15 (7:05 pm ET)
Nathan Eovaldi (4-2, 3.16 ERA) (BOS) vs Jordan Montgomery (3-2, 3.19 ERA) (NYY)

The Yankees have cooled off a bit, winning just four of their last ten. However, the Red Sox have not taken advantage, dropping eight of their last ten. As the two teams renew their storied rivalry, Jordan Montgomery starts for the Pinstripes, looking to bounce back from a hard-luck start last Saturday at Fenway. He threw 5 ⅔ innings of five-hit, two-run ball, striking out four, but then the Yankees’ bullpen cratered in a 6-5 loss in ten innings.

Nathan Eovaldi comes back after some time on the IL with lower back inflammation with a nerve impingement that gave him pain in his hip. He was throwing extremely well, with the Sox getting wins in four of his last five starts. His last two starts were particularly dominant, as he threw 11 shutout innings, scattering 10 hits and striking out 13 while walking just 1 in wins over Oakland and the Angels, both on the road. Can he get right back to that dominant form?

Final Prediction: Boston 4, New York 2

Saturday, July 9 (7:15 pm ET, FOX)
Nick Pivetta (8-6, 4.08 ERA) (BOS) vs Jameson Taillon (9-2, 4.01 ERA) (NYY)

Nick Pivetta has been getting lit up lately. In his last two starts, he has permitted 13 runs on 16 hits, including a pair of home runs. That led to an 8-4 loss to Tampa Bay, but the offense was able to roar back in an 11-6 win over the Yankees on Sunday. It’s hard to expect the bats to bail him out if he gets in trouble again.

Jameson Taillon has also been getting hit hard lately. In three of his last four starts, he has permitted at least two home runs and five earned runs in each game. He started opposite Pivetta on Sunday and permitted six earned runs on seven hits, including three long balls, in just five innings. With both of these pitchers giving up a lot of offense, consider taking the “over” in this one.

Final Prediction: New York 10, Boston 6

Sunday, July 10 (1:35 pm ET)
Chris Sale (0-0, 0.00 ERA) (BOS) vs Gerrit Cole (8-2, 3.05 ERA) (NYY)

Chris Sale makes his second start of 2022 on Sunday afternoon. His first start went well, but the bullpen failed to protect him, as he scattered three hits and a walk, striking out five in five shutout innings in a game the Sox would lose, 3-2. Durability might be an issue as Sale works his way back into the rotation, but Sale’s stuff is popping right now.

Gerrit Cole continues to pitch at an ace level for the Yankees. In his last start, he threw seven innings of shutout ball, striking out 11 while walking just one and scattering four hits. The bullpen let Cincinnati off the mat, though, as the Reds won, 4-3. He gave up five earned runs on five hits, including two home runs, in Boston last Thursday. Expect a low score in the day game, at least until the bullpens get involved.

Final Prediction: New York 4, Boston 3
