MLB Power Rankings July 11

Every week MLB teams will be ranked for the rest of the season. Here are the 2022 MLB power rankings for the week of July 11.

1. New York Yankees

Record: 61-25

Previous Ranking: 1

As expected, the Yankees remain in the number 1 spot. The Bronx Bombers bounced back from back-to-back losses to start the week, with 3 consecutive wins and 34 runs scored in those 3 games. They were the first team to reach 60 wins, as they did so with just 23 losses.

2. Houston Astros

Record: 56-29

Previous Ranking: 2

The Astros have closed the distance on the Yankees as of late. They feature one of the deepest lineups in baseball, as well as a CY Young favorite in Justin Verlander. They sit less than six games out of the best record in baseball and they have been on fire as of late.

3. Los Angeles Dodgers

Record: 56-29

Previous Ranking: 3

The Dodgers have been on fire as of late. They swept the Rockies to start the week. Tony Gonsolin has been otherworldly for the Dodgers, as he is still perfect with an 11-0 record through 16 starts. The 28-year-old leads the MLB in ERA (1.62) and WHIP (0.80), and he has only allowed 48 hits in nearly 90 innings.

4. New York Mets

Record: 53-33

Previous Ranking: 4

Max Scherzer made his long-awaited return, in triumphant fashion, as struck out 11 Reds batters over 6 innings. He allowed two hits and didn’t give up a run in the start. Jacob DeGrom nears his return, looking to make his 2022 debut. The addition of these two arms would catapult the Mets starting rotation among the best in the league.

5. Atlanta Braves

Record: 52-35

Previous Ranking: 6

The Braves took 3/4 from the Cardinals to start the week, including a masterful pitching performance from their ace, Max Fried. They remain one of the best, hardest-hitting, deepest lineups in the entire MLB, with threatening pieces from 1 through 9 in the order.

6. San Diego Padres

Record: 49-38

Previous Ranking: 5

Manny Machado remains the triple crown holder for the Padres, leading the team in HR, RBIs, and batting average. The Padres’ offense isn’t as good as it was expected to be. They rank in the bottom 5 in the MLB in Barrel%, HardHit%, exit velocity, and home runs. The return of Fernando Tatis looks to provide a boost to this.

7. Milwaukee Brewers

Record: 48-39

Previous Ranking: 8

The Brewers pitching staff has been incredible, led by CY Young candidate Corbin Burnes. They rank second in strikeouts (796) and exit velocity allowed (87.7 MPH). Burnes paces the starting rotation while Josh Hader and Devin Williams provide a lockdown 8th and 9th inning of relief.

8. Boston Red Sox

Record: 47-39

Previous Ranking: 9

The Red Sox have struggled as of late. Rafael Devers has been incredible, getting off to a hot start this month. The Red Sox feature three hitters with an OBP of .380 or higher and an OPS of .830 or higher. They will need their pitching to be better down the stretch if they plan on making any noise in October.

9. Toronto Blue Jays

Record: 45-42

Previous Ranking: 7

Alejandro Kirk has been one of the league’s best catchers this season. He was rightfully named the AL starting catcher for this year’s All-Star game. He currently has a slash line of .310/.395/.485. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was also named as the starting first baseman for the AL.

10. Tampa Bay Rays

Record: 45-40

Previous Ranking: 13

The Rays dropped a series to the Reds this week, including two walk-off losses. One of those walk-offs was a walk-off balk in the bottom of the 10th inning. With the AL Wild Card being a very tight race as of now, the Rays will need to rebound going into next week.

11. Minnesota Twins

Record: 48-40

Previous Ranking: 11

The Twins still hold a decent lead in the AL Central. While most teams are either hot or cold, the Twins appear to be running in place right now. That isn’t the worst-case scenario for Minnesota fans, as the other teams in the AL Central aren’t gaining too much ground.

12. Philadelphia Phillies

Record: 46-40

Previous Ranking: 14

After the injury to MVP frontrunner, Bryce Harper, many expected the Phillies to fold. They have done quite the opposite. With a record of 7-3 over their last 10 games, pitching has catapulted them up this list and up the NL Wild Card standings.

13. St. Louis Cardinals

Record: 46-42

Previous Ranking: 10

The Cardinals have struggled as of late. They have been forced to play the Phillies in two series, the Braves in one, and will match up with the top-ranked Dodgers next. They must do whatever they can to keep the team afloat and avoid a complete downward spiral.

14. Seattle Mariners

Record: 45-42

Previous Ranking: 20

The Mariners have been the hottest team in baseball as of late. Seattle sits at over .500 for the first time since these power rankings began. They have won 7 consecutive games, before their Sunday matchup with the Blue Jays. They took down CY Young favorite, Alek Manoah, on Saturday by a score of 2-1, scoring both of their runs off Manoah.

15. San Francisco Giants

Record: 43-41

Previous Ranking: 12

The Giants are more than likely going to have to hunt out a Wild Card spot if they want to make the playoffs. They sit only 3 games back from the Phillies for the 3rd spot in the NL Wild Card. They will need to ride on the back of Joc Pederson if they plan to get there.

16. Cleveland Guardians

Record: 41-42

Previous Ranking: 15

The Guardians are the best team in baseball that has a negative run differential. They are currently just 5 runs in the negative on that stat. Shane Bieber and Triston McKenzie lead the way for the starting pitching staff while Emmanuel Clase provides the shutdown relief out of the bullpen.

17. Baltimore Orioles

Record: 43-44

Previous Ranking: 21

The Orioles are hot!! The Orioles are hot!! Who would have thought that the Orioles would be a few games below .500 in July? This resurgence has been quite a surprise, but a good surprise at that. They sit in last place in the AL East, the toughest division in baseball. But maybe they aren’t as far from being a contending team as many predicted.

18. Miami Marlins

Record: 41-43

Previous Ranking: 19

Every week, I can’t help but mention the Marlins’ electric pitching staff. This week, I’ll highlight the offense, as they have 4 hitters hitting above .250. They also have two hitters (Jazz Chisholm and Garrett Cooper) with an OPS above .830. The future is bright.

19. Chicago White Sox

Record: 41-43

Previous Ranking: 18

The White Sox have a 47.8% chance to make the playoffs, according to FanGraphs. This comes with them sitting 3.5 games out of a wild card spot and a few games under .500. The White Sox are incredibly talented and would be a threat to anybody in October, if they can put the pieces together.

20. Los Angeles Angels

Record: 38-49

Previous Ranking: 16

Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani remain the only bright spots on this team, both securing starting spots in the All-Star Game. But two players can only do so much. The Angels have struggled mightily, even with the two incredible players in their lineup.

21. Texas Rangers

Record: 39-44

Previous Ranking: 17

The Rangers season is not over. They sit less than five games from a wild card spot as of now. They have four guys with a WAR above 2.0 so far, including Martin Perez, who has been phenomenal.

22. Colorado Rockies

Record: 38-48

Previous Ranking: 23

The Rockies are just a step behind in the NL West. The West features three elite teams and the Rockies just don’t have the pieces to compete just yet. With an aging core, they will have to completely hit the reset button before they are competitive.

23. Arizona Diamondbacks

Record: 38-48

Previous Ranking: 22

The Diamondbacks are in the same boat as the Rockies, just a step behind the other teams in the NL West. With almost their entire core on the wrong side of 30 years old, they will also need to hit the reset button before they can make a deep run.

24. Pittsburgh Pirates

Record: 36-50

Previous Ranking: 25

The Pirates are eager to see the development of Oneil Cruz in the second half of the year. He has shown incredible raw talent, but he is struggling to adjust. The Pirates, as a whole, need to focus on keeping their young core together and giving themselves a chance to compete in the coming years.

25. Detroit Tigers

Record: 36-49

Previous Ranking: 27

Miguel Cabrera was named an honorary member of the MLB All-Star Game. He was selected by the MLB commissioner along with Albert Pujols.

26. Chicago Cubs

Record: 34-52

Previous Ranking: 24

Willson Contreras was named the NL staring catcher for the MLB All-Star Game. He will likely be one of, if not the only, Cubs All-Star this year.

27. Cincinnati Reds

Record: 32-54

Previous Ranking: 29

The Reds beat the Rays with a walk-off balk this week, marking the 23rd time this has happened in the history of the MLB. With balks becoming rarer and rarer, this outcome will become more and more unlikely in the future.

28. Kansas City Royals

Record: 32-52

Previous Ranking: 26

Andrew Benintendi and Bobby Witt Jr. lead the way for the Royals. Witt Jr. looks to build on the first half of the year to contend for the AL Rookie of the Year award.

29. Washington Nationals

Record: 30-58

Previous Ranking: 28

Juan Soto began the year at a tremendously bad start, per his expectations. But, in the short sample size of July, he has turned it around. He is hitting near .500 on the month. His BB% and xSLG both remain among the league’s best, which further supports that he will turn this cold start around soon.

30. Oakland Athletics

Record: 29-58

Previous Ranking: 30

The Athletics have put together one of the worst offensive seasons in recent memory. Halfway through the season, they have only scored 272 runs and they are hitting an abysmal .209 as a team this season.
