IT’S SHOH-TIME: Shohei Ohtani is officially the MLB The Show 22 cover athlete

This puts their launch a bit later than we saw last year with MLB The Show 21’s April 20, 2021 release date, but it lines up much closer to the potential MLB Opening Day on March 31, 2022.

Of course, that’s assuming nothing about this MLB season gets delayed by the ongoing lockout, which we’ve fortunately learned will not impact MLB The Show 22.

Cover Athlete & Trailer Revealed

We’ve learned the official MLB The Show 22 cover athlete will be none other than Shohei Ohtani, and in reality there was no other choice.

At just 27-years-old, Shohei Ohtani put on a year for the ages in 2021 by finishing the season as an All-Star, All-MLB First Team, AP Athlete of the Year, and American League MVP.

He also won the Silver Slugger Award, Edgar Martinez Award, and Commissioner’s Historic Achievement Award, further solidifying him as the biggest superstar in baseball today.

This very first trailer focuses entirely on the reveal of Shohei Ohtani, and it highlights some of what has made his career so special and why he’s earned this honor.

We expect to have an MVP Edition and Digital Deluxe Edition in addition to the Standard Edition of MLB The Show 22, as they’ve been mentioned as including both the current gen and next gen versions of the game, but we don’t know further details yet.

MLB The Show 22 Standard Edition will be $59.99 on PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, but it will be $69.99 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

For players who purchase the digital version of the game on PS4 or Xbox One, they’ll be able to spend $10 at a later time for a digital upgrade to PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.

New Features

We saw several major features debut with MLB The Show 21, including the new Pinpoint Pitching system and additions like Stadium Creator.

We’ve learned Stadium Creator will be back, but it remains exclusive to the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of MLB The Show 22.

Crossplay and cross-platform progression also return this year, even including the new Nintendo Switch version.
