NBA Championship Odds Update: Warriors Lead By Curry and Company Contenders

Did you have the Philadelphia 76ers dropping four in a row while the Washington Wizards won four in a row to streak to the top of the Eastern Conference standings? The first was a little easier to predict as Joel Embiid has missed four games in the wake of a positive COVID-19 test. He has shown symptoms as well, which means that he could be out longer than the minimum of 10 days for symptomatic players. This season, Philadelphia is 8-6 — but just 1-4 when Embiid has missed. In the Western Conference, the hottest team is the Phoenix Suns, winners of eight in a row. Let’s take a look at the latest NBA betting odds for each NBA team to win a title this summer.

The Golden State Warriors look like they have turned back the clock to four or five years ago. They are running small-ball lineups at warp speed, and their offense is mesmerizing to watch. Steph Curry leads the MVP conversation this year, and Draymond Green is still delivering shutdown defense. Klay Thompson is not even back yet! To be fair, the Warriors have had an easy schedule through their first 13 games. However, they have taken care of business.

On the other coast, the Brooklyn Nets are wowing observers. Kevin Durant is head and shoulders above most of the rest of the league (can you imagine if he still played for the Warriors?). James Harden is working his way back, and so the fact that the team is 10-4 without Harden and Kyrie Irving suggests that this is the Big Three dreadnought that we thought they would be. Perhaps the most surprising number is the fact that the defensive rating for the starting five leads the NBA. How will that change when Harden returns?

The Phoenix Suns continue to get solid distribution from Chris Paul, and Frank Kaminsky has provided valuable minutes inside as Deandre Ayton remains on the shelf. This is a team that rolled to the NBA Finals with swagger a year ago and show few signs of any regression.

The Denver Nuggets have a 9-4 record with Michael Porter Jr on the shelf indefinitely with that back injury. This year’s team is the opposite of last year’s, as their defense is elite…but their scoring struggles at times. In the last six seasons, Denver has had a top-three offensive rebound rate, but this season so far they are below the league average, and when Nikola Jokic checks out, the numbers plummet.

The Washington Wizards have the best defense in the NBA over the last five games. When was the last time you read that sentence? Bradley Beal is still rounding into form, while Montrezl Harrell and Kyle Kuzma have been carrying the offense in the meantime. When Beal gets his scoring touch for the season, this will be a scary bunch.

The Chicago Bulls have Nikola Vucevic out due to COVID-19, and Patrick Williams has not yet played in November. Lonzo Ball is shooting 41.6% from downtown, and he is also a skilled distributor. DeMar DeRozan is shooting below his career averages on mid-range shots, and when he reverts to form, the Bulls will be even harder to beat.
