Adelaide 36ers vs South East Melbourne Phoenix Friday Mar 04, 7:30pm Adelaide Entertainment Centre

Despite signing the likes of 2018 First team All-Sac Todd Withers, Filipino fan favourite Kai Sotto and ex-Australian Gold Medal winner and current NBL champion Mitch McCarron over the off-season, things have gone drastically wrong for the 36ers this campaign.  They began their schedule with a pair of back-to-back defeats in which they only put up 73 and 71 points respectively against Perth and Illawarra. From there on in its only gotten worse and worse as they occupy 8^th position on the ladder and sit just a win above last with a tattered 5-9 record. Despite the signature of C.J. Bruton as the clubs latest coach, a six-time NBL Grand Final Series winner, the 46-year-old hasn’t been able to inspire Adelaide to any particularly great heights this season.

This only pales in comparison to South East Melbourne who are just two wins behind 1^st, as they sit 2^nd on the ladder with an impressive 10-5 record, being commandingly led by the likes of Mitch Creek – 21.1PPG and Xavier Munford – 14.4PPG. After being bowed out by Melbourne United during the opening week of the finals last season, they appear well primed to have another serious tilt at the Championship this season under the guidance of Simon Mitchell. Their latest game at John Cain Arena was the strongest possible indication of that, as they toppled Perth 86-80, outlasting them till the very end in the process. They began hot, winning Qs 1 & 2, 21-15 and 24-16 respectively. Whilst Kyle Adnam was the hero, pouring in a huge 26PTS off the bench, in part via his four three-pointers, as he also grabbed 2REB and 6AST. Creek also joined in with 22PTS, 4REB, 3AST and 1STL.

Despite the situation being pretty much do-or-die for Adelaide right now, it’s exceedingly difficult to see them toppling a red-hot Phoenix side at this point in time. They’ve won seven of their last ten games and are stacked with regards to all aspects of their team. Even Cam Gliddon only played nine-minutes against Perth and he’s a former NBL Rookie of the Year, so South East have this one in the bag!

Tasmania JackJumpers vs New Zealand Breakers Saturday Mar 05, 5:30pm Silverdome

At the start of the season many thought Tasmania would be finishing in 10^th spot, with New Zealand perhaps having a bit of a jilt at a Top Four berth. However, events couldn’t have proceeded any more differently for the two vastly contrasting franchises with the JackJumpers currently fighting tooth and nail with Illawarra, Sydney and a host of other franchises for 4^th spot. Meanwhile the Breakers on the other hand are literally breaking under the pressure, with a poor 4-11 record on the campaign. Something that isn’t at all aided might I add by New Zealand’s strict COVID rules which are forcing them to play out their entire season on Australian soil. ‘Tassies’ fighting spirit was embodied last round in their home 11-point defeat to Perth. As they stayed alive for most of the matchup until the Wildcats pulled away late to get on with the job. Meanwhile the ‘Kiwis’ showed a few positive signs but were ultimately outplayed on the day in their 15-point defeat to the Hawks, also at MyState Bank Arena.

Jack McVeigh was a strong contributor in his 100^th NBL appearance, as the wily veteran hit a pair of threes to help boost his 16PTS, while he also had 5REB and 1BLK. Meanwhile Jock Perry in his first ever NBL game was fantastic, as he shot 3/6 from the floor, to help aid his 7PTS, 1REB and 1AST in under nine-minutes of playing time. Outside of them, Josh Adams had 15PTS and Clint Steindl 12PTS. Whilst Josh Magette was poor, producing only 8PTS, yet he helped make up for it a lil with 5REB, 6AST and 2STL to his name. As for the Breakers, all five of their starters scored in double-figures, led by Hugo Besson who fashioned 20PTS. After him it was Kyrin Galloway with 16PTS, Chasson Randle with 15PTS and both Finn Delany & Peyton Silva who secured 12PTS each.

The Breakers will probably keep this one close for large periods of the game. However, when push comes to shove, Tasmania should ultimately have them covered all over. Magette has 26 games of NBA experience with the Magic and Hawks, Adams is averaging 16.2PPG, while Fabijan Krslovic is a sharp-shooter and Silver Medal winner. Not to mention all the NBL veterans they posses on their pine via the likes of Jarrad Weeks and Steindl. ‘Tassies’ form comes back right here.

Melbourne United vs Brisbane Bullets Saturday Mar 05, 8:00pm John Cain Arena

Melbourne United have won their last four games on the trot, as for Brisbane their shaky form has been well shaky, as they’ve prevailed in just two of their previous nine matchups. Meanwhile United have won five of their last six home matches and the Bullets have fired blanks in their last five on the road. Melbourne have also defeated Brisbane in five of their last eight overall games. Yet in a sign of flashing hope for Brisbane, it was only last year where they beat Melbourne in Victoria, 96-88! And it was surprisingly 2020 NBL Best Sixth Man Jason Cadee who made his presence felt with 19PTS, 4REB and 3AST. On the season the ex-Gold Coast Blaze baller is averaging a respectable 9.1PPG, while hitting 35.2% of his attempted shots from deep. Brisbane simply cannot beat Melbourne on a starting five basis. However, the performance of a man who can either start, or be a sparkplug off the bench, whom is also an x-factor player and scored 13PTS last time out on 50% shooting, is incredibly capable of ever so slightly swinging the result around in ‘Brissies’ favour.

Cadee also fashioned 3REB and 3AST in his sides tense eight-point win over Tasmania at Nissan Arena. He wasn’t alone in his exploits, as Robert Franks exploded for 23PTS, 11REB and 2AST. While Lamar Patterson bagged 16PTS, 3REB, 10AST and 1STL. Nathan Sobey also secured 14PTS, 4REB, 2AST and 2STL.  And Deng Deng was a massive boost off the bench via his 14PTS, 5REB, 2AST, 1STL and 1BLK. Franks, the 2021 NBA G-League champion is another, similar to Cadee, who has the potential to provide Brisbane with the spark needed to upset Melbourne. Of his 23PTS, his converted 4/6 from close-range. His interior game is lethal and could potentially be used to wear Melbourne down, bit by bit.

The Bullets are more then capable of causing a real upset here. They’re coming off that previously mentioned shock, yet well-deserved win over Tasmania, while it wasn’t too long ago that they sprung a surprise result over the Kings either. The odds are stacked against them, but in a team full of individually superb talents, they’re more then capable of putting out one hell of an effort against Melbourne!
