New Warcraft title on Mobile in 2022, says Blizzard

Blizzard revealed their plan to release a Warcraft mobile game this year in its quarterly financial results.

Since all of us have phones, Blizzard continues their mobile endeavor when they revealed plans to release a Warcraft game for mobile devices in its quarterly earnings review with investors and analysts.

Buried deep in Activision Blizzard’s Q4 2021 financial results statement lies a seemingly inconspicuous line stating, “Blizzard is planning substantial new content for the Warcraft franchise in 2022, including new experiences in World of Warcraft and Hearthstone, and getting all-new mobile Warcraft content into players’ hands for the first time.”

Now, rumours of a Warcraft mobile game (not named Hearthstone) have surfaced since 2017, even before 2018’s announcement of Diablo Immortal that was immortalized for its bad taste.

Although no official details have been disclosed, it is certainly pivotal to know if the content is indeed canon with the ongoing World of Warcraft (WoW) universe.

Will it be a WoW mobile port? A resurgence of Warcraft RTS? Or even a rumoured Pokemon GO-like augmented reality game?

Nothing concrete yet in the rumour mill, but Blizzard affirmed that it is working on “substantial new content for the Warcraft franchise in 2022,” as well as “new experiences in World of Warcraft and Hearthstone”.

This mobile venture matches Activision Blizzard’s ambition to infiltrate the mobile market further, as the earning report shows users spent more than $1billion on Call of Duty Mobile in 2021.

It is worthwhile to note that Diablo Immortal is also scheduled to release in the first half of this year. So, it is safe to assume the Warcraft mobile game will only be out in the market by Q3 or Q4.

Nonetheless, whatever Blizzard is brewing is probably something that has been in the pipeline for a while and not a reactionary response to Microsoft’s $68.7 billion acquisition.
