NFL Tips – Week Eight
Pittsburgh Steelers @ Cleveland Browns, Sunday, 5pm
Baker Mayfield may be back for this one, but with the state of his shoulder he just is not the same player. Up against this tough Pittsburgh defence he could be in for a rough game if he does play. If it is Case Keenum it does not give much more hope. The Steelers have their own problems with Ben Roethlisberger, but they can get it done with lots of work for Najee Harris. This may not end up being a classic, but back the Steelers to come out on top as they have so often against the Browns.
Selections: Steelers 1-6,7-12
San Francisco 49ers @ Chicago Bears, Sunday, 5pm
The 49ers just do not seem to be working right now, but they have more than enough to take care of business against the Bears. Justin Fields has bags of potential but he is struggling right now. The 49ers defensive front is likely to be in his face all game long and that is not a recipe for success for Chicago. It looks like it will be Jimmy Garoppolo at quarterback again and he may not be the most exciting player, but he has shown over the years that he can get it done in games like this. San Francisco will be without George Kittle for one more week but Deebo Samuel has really broken out as a star for this team.
Selections: 49ers 7-12
Carolina Panthers @ Atlanta Falcons, Sunday, 5pm
The Panthers just look like a broken team after so much early promise. Without Christian McCaffrey the offence just does not work. They have been linked with a move for Deshaun Watson this week but it will be Sam Darnold for at least one more game and that is probably not a good thing. The Falcons are a strange team. They have so much talent on offence in particular, but while it is improving, it has not quite clicked just yet. Kyle Pitts is starting to show why he was taken so high in the draft and Cordarelle Patterson is having a breakout season at 30 years old. They should have too much for Carolina and can pile on the misery for the division rivals.
Selections: Falcons 1-6,7-12
Washington Football Team @ Denver Broncos, Sunday, 8:25pm
Washington are a fun team, but not a good team. Taylor Heinicke is a perfect Ryan Fitzpatrick back up because he is exciting to watch, but ultimately does not win enough games. The Broncos are the opposite as they are just not exciting. Teddy Bridgewater is almost definitely not the guy in Denver but he will likely see out the season. Jerry Jeudy is likely to return and that will be a boost for the offence. The Broncos have enough on offence to just get this one done at home.
Selections: Broncos 1-6
Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ New Orleans Saints, Sunday, 8:25pm
The Buccaneers are just rolling on. Their loss to the Rams feels like a distant memory as they just continue to get things done with Tom Brady looking as good as ever. With Kyler Murray’s poor game on Thursday Night Football he may well end the week as favourite for MVP. Antonio Brown looks set to miss some time but they get Rob Gronkowski back for this one. The games with the Saints are always tough, and this one is likely to be similar, but the Saints offence does not appear to offer enough of a threat outside of Alvin Kamara to send the Bucs home with a loss.
Selections: Buccaneers 1-6,7-12
Dallas Cowboys @ Minnesota Vikings, Monday, 0:20am
Dallas have been so good this season and there is little from the Vikings that makes me think they can stop them. Kirk Cousins’ record in prime time games is well documented and up against a team that has momentum like the Cowboys it is hard to see that changing here. Dak Prescott is an MVP contender and they look to have this division wrapped up already. If the defence can continue as it has started the season then they are a genuine threat for the Super Bowl. These are two good teams, but the Cowboys are just a tier above Minnesota.
Selections: Cowboys 7-12,13-18
New York Giants @ Kansas City Chiefs, Tuesday, 0:15am
The Chiefs struggles have been well documented, but they have only lost to good teams so far. Patrick Mahomes has not looked quite himself but I would always back him to find it and he can get right against the struggling Giants. At 2-5 New York may already be looking to next season and potentially moving on from Daniel Jones. They got a win last week but they just look so poor, despite some talent on both sides of the ball. It is unlikely to be enough though and the Chiefs can bounce back with a big win here as they start a second half push towards the playoffs and potentially a third straight Super Bowl.
Selections: Chiefs 7-12,13-18,19-24
