Sony has officially announced coloured console cover plates for the PlayStation 5 – finally! – alongside brand new DualSense colours. Five new colours have been revealed for the PS5, and three new colours for the DualSense, all of which will be available from January 2022.
Update: The ‘Console Covers’ will cost $54.99 MSRP while DualSense controllers have their standard $74.99 MSRP.
The options PS5 owners can have for the console cover plates include Midnight Black, Cosmic Red, Galactic Purple, Nova Pink, and Starlight Blue. The last three colours in that list are also the three new colours for the DualSense controller.
The PS5 cover plate options
Both the PS5 covers and the new DualSense options will start going on sale in January, but there will be a wait between some options.
Sony writes: “The Midnight Black and Cosmic Red PS5 console covers will become available starting in January 2022 at participating retailers in the following locations: USA, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Korea, and the Philippines. The Nova Pink, Galactic Purple, and Starlight Blue PS5 console covers will also launch in these locations during the first half of 2022. We plan to launch the PS5 console covers in additional territories during the year, and we’ll announce those details as they become available.”
Replacing the covers is a fairly simple task of taking the white PS5 cover off with a firm pull in a particular direction, and clicking the new ones into place. It’s a task that anyone who’s decided to install an SSD into their console will be familiar with.
This marks the first official set of console covers, though third party companies have tried to get ahead of Sony in this market. DBrand is the most recent company to offer these third party plates, getting past a Sony cease and desist with a new design. Prior to that The Plate Station tried to sell during the PS5 launch window, though did not survive for very long.
