- Eight different coaches are listed at favorite odds of +1500 in the opening 2022 NFL Coach of the Year betting line
- Counted in this group are Super Bowl winners Sean McVay (Los Angeles Rams) and Andy Reid (Kansas City Chiefs)
- Mike Vrabel of the Tennessee Titans, the 2021 NFL COY winner, is also at odds of +1500
The bookmakers setting the odds for the NFL coach of the year couldn’t settle on one candidate who stood out in the crowd. In fact, when it came time to establish the favorite to win the award, their conclusion was eight is enough.
Eight NFL coaches share the favorite’s betting line of +1500 in the opening NFL coach of the year odds. The list includes two of the last three Super Bowl winners – Sean McVay of the Los Angeles Rams and Andy Reid of the Kansas City Chiefs – as well as Mike Vrabel of the Tennessee Titans. Vrabel was the 2021 NFL COY.

Worthy of note is that Vrabel was never favored to win NFL COY last season. His opening line was a distant +3000. Even heading into the night the award was presented at NFL honors, Vrabel was still the +350 third betting choice behind Matt LaFleur of the Green Bay Packers and Zac Taylor of the Cincinnati Bengals.

Don’t Bet On a Repeat Performance
They’ve been presenting the NFL COY Award since 1957. Only twice has a coach won it in successive years. Allie Sherman of the New York Giants (1961-62) and Washington’s Joe Gibbs (1981-82) are this dynamic duo.

That doesn’t bode well for a repeat performance for Vrabel. In fact, the last three winners of the NFL COY all saw their teams regress in the season after their victory.
Matt Nagy’s (2018) Chicago Bears went from 12-4 to 8-8. John Harbaugh (2019) saw his Baltimore Ravens slip from 14-2 to 11-5. Last season, Kevin Stefanski’s Cleveland Browns stumbled from 11-5 to 8-9.
Is Three the One?
Playing future bets is always an exercise in patience. Based on recent outcomes, it might take even more patience to hit a winner in the NFL COY.
The last two seasons, the coach sitting third in the final betting odds is the one who walked away with the award. Vrabel was trailing both Taylor (+160) and LaFleur (+168) in the lasted posted betting line.

In 2020, Stefanski was at +700 in the final posted odds. His chances of winning were considered much longer than Buffalo’s Sean McDermott (+100) and Miami’s Brian Flores (+150).
Does that mean you should wait to see who’s sitting third on the eve of the presentation of the award? Maybe.
Which NFL Coach Is About to Have a Year to Remember?
No award is a bigger betting crapshoot than the NFL COY. Injuries, a slow start, untimely turnovers – so many things can go wrong to send a promising season tumbling south.
Two coaches at +1500 worth considering are Buffalo’s Sean McDermott and Brandon Staley of the Los Angeles Chargers. Considering the job he’s done with the Bills, it’s amazing that McDermott hasn’t won this award. Staley came close to getting LA into the playoffs in his first season. Should he get them over the hump, Staley would gain a groundswell of support.
Russ cited the "culture" instilled by new HC Nathaniel Hackett as a driving force behind his desire to join the #Broncos.
Players of his ilk weren't saying that about the last guy in charge. Nothing even close.
It's truly a new day in #BroncosCountry, folks. How fun is this.

However, it’s another of the group of eight at +1500 that you should like. The theory of the Denver Broncos last season was that they were a quarterback away from being a Super Bowl contender. They got that QB when they traded for Super Bowl winner Russell Wilson.
Just like Stefanski, who won the NFL COY during his first season in Cleveland, new Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett could be the right man in the right place at the right time.
Pick: Nathaniel Hackett, Denver Broncos (+1500)
