How the mighty have fallen. Just nine short months ago, Oregon State was shocking the college basketball world game after game. They swept the Pac-12 tournament, and parlayed their automatic March Madness bid into an improbable Elite Eight run.

This season however, has been a different story. Despite a roster consisting of two returning starters and 12 upperclassmen, the Beavers are off to a miserable 1-6 start. They’ll look to turn things around Thursday (Dec. 2nd), when they travel to California for their conference opener.

Oregon State Beavers Betting Analysis

The Beavers start is especially disappointing given their quality of competition so far. They’ve faced four teams ranked 124th or worse, and have come away with just one victory. Home losses to Samford (#273) and Princeton (#124) are especially deflating, as was their performance last time out versus Penn State.

The Nittany Lions (#61) are the highest ranked team Oregon State has faced so far, and the result was not pretty. The Beavers fell 60-45, setting new season lows in both points and field goal percentage. They shot just 30% from the field, including a dismal 4-for-17 from beyond the arc. Jarod Lucas was the only Beaver who reached double-figures, while their other four starters combined for only 7 points.

Defensively, they allowed Penn State to shoot 40.7 from the field, and 40% from three. Oregon State ranks 167th in the country in scoring defense, 202nd in opponent effective field goal percentage, and 205th in defensive rebounding.

Offensively, the numbers aren’t much better. They’re 242nd in points per game, 231st in effective field goal percentage, and 290th in three-point efficiency. No wonder they’re 1-6.

California Golden Bears Betting Analysis

California meanwhile, is no juggernaut themselves. They opened with a pair of losses, and after back-to-back victories, they’ve since dropped two of their past three contests. Last time out, they did get a victory, although it came against Fresno State, the second lowest ranked program they’ve faced so far.

The Golden Bears took down the Bulldogs 65-57, led by Jordan Shepherd’s 17. Andre Kelly poured in 14, and Grant Anticevich splashed 13, while Cal shot 47% from the field, and 43.8% from three.

Defensively, they forced 12 turnovers and held Fresno State to its lowest point total of the season. They’re numbers are much stronger at that end of the court, as they rank 128th in scoring defense, and 151st in effective field goal percentage.

Offensively, they’ve failed to reach 68 points in five of seven contests, and rank 257th in points per game. They’re 219th in effective field goal percentage, and 329th in assists per game.

Oregon State vs California Pick

Not surprisingly, the weak offensive numbers and respectable defensive stats have led to many low scoring games for Cal. The under is 4-1 in the Golden Bears’ last five contests, including 4-0 at home. Cal doesn’t excel in major offensive or defensive category, but they’ve still been terrific at covering spreads. They’re 5-2 against the spread this season, including 3-1 at home.

Oregon State on the other hand, has not been kind to its backers. The Beavers are 1-6 against the spread, and have yet to cover on the road this season. Much like Cal, their games have also underwhelmed in the box score. The under is 3-1 in their last four outings, and this game profiles as another low scoring affair.

Pick: California -2.5 (-105), Under 127 (-120)
