The San Diego Padres were swept in a road series against the Colorado Rockies.
The Padres were unable to come up with a single win in the three games played at Coors Field. San Diego has lost 10 straight games against the Rockies in Coors Field, dating back to last season.
In the first game of the series, starting pitcher MacKenzie Gore had a rough outing. Gore was only able to pitch in four innings, and he gave up eight runs in those innings. He was only able to strike out one Colorado hitter. This outing was reminiscent of his performance against the Rockies last week when he gave up six runs in 2 â…“ innings pitched. These two rough outings have brought his ERA up to 3.64 on the season.
The pitching was not great in this game, but some of the Padres hitters produced. Second baseman Jake Cronenworth had two hits in the game. Along with that, third baseman Manny Machado had a hit and an RBI to raise his RBI total to 44 on the season. Although there was some production from a few hitters, the Padres lost this game with a score of 10-4.
The next game in the series turned out to be a close one.
Nick Martinez started the game and pitched five innings. He was far from spectacular in this one, giving up four runs and only pitching one strikeout. However, he did not let the game get out-of-hand. The bullpen was solid in relief of Martinez up until the eighth inning.
Reliever Luis Garcia gave up a home run to Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon in the bottom of the eighth inning. This home run gave the Rockies the lead that they were able to successfully close out. The Padres lost this game 5-4.
The Padres hitters who produced in the previous game also hit well in this one. Cronenworth went 2-for-4 with a walk, and Machado went 2-for-4 with a walk as well. Machado also got two more RBIs to bring his total to 46 on the season. His 46 RBIs is good for 11th out of all players in the MLB.
A rough fifth inning in the final game of the series contributed to yet another loss in this series.
Blake Snell was on the mound to start out this game, and he was only able to pitch in 4 â…” innings. In those innings, Snell gave up five runs, with four of them being earned. He struggled with control throughout this game, as he gave up four walks to Rockies hitters.
The Padres lost this game 8-3. Snell’s record now sits at 0-4, and he is still looking for his first win of the season. His ERA sits at 5.46 on the season, which is far from the 1.89 ERA he had in 2018 when he won the AL Cy Young Award with the Tampa Bay Rays.
Machado was unfortunately injured in this game. He was running to first after a weak hit in front of home plate. His left foot slid across the bag, and he fell to the ground. Machado then grabbed his ankle in pain, which was due to a sprain in his left ankle. The x-rays on his ankle did come back negative. However, he is expected to miss several weeks.
The Padres have moved back down to second place in the NL West, with a record of 41-27. The Los Angeles Dodgers reclaimed the top spot in the division, leading by half a game. However, the Padres do hold the top NL Wild Card spot by 2.5 games. The Padres will look to rebound in their upcoming home series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
