Parramatta Eels vs Brisbane Broncos Preview

A crunch game to kick off the round between two 11-6 teams. Fifth-placed Brisbane and sixth-placed Parramatta sit just a win off second.

After back-to-back losses to heavyweights Melbourne and North Queensland, the Adam Reynolds-led Broncos showed real grit to knock over St George Illawarra (32-18) and Gold Coast (16-12) without their Origin contingent and several other injured front-liners.

Queensland heroes Patrick Carrigan, Kurt Capewell and Corey Oates return, as does injured NSW prop Payne Haas. But Selwyn Cobb (concussion) remains out with Jordan Pereira holding a wing spot. Jake Turpin will start at hooker with Billy Walters (hip) sidelined.

Since their woeful Round 16 loss to Souths, the enigmatic Eels have negotiated a couple of banana skins against the Tigers (28-20) and Warriors (28-18) with relative comfort. They get Ryan Matterson back from injury this week with Marata Niukore slipping back to the bench.

The blue-and-golds played well within themselves and will be looking to lift a gear as their schedule gets tougher in coming weeks.

Parramatta is on a five-game winning streak against Brisbane. The Eels’ 46-6 romp in Darwin last years was their third victory over the Broncos during the current run by a 28-plus margin.

Both teams are dripping with firepower across the park, boasting dynamic halves and mobile, metre-eating forwards (the Eels are second in the NRL for post-contact metres, the Broncos fifth).

Whoever can tighten up defensively will gain a massive edge on Thursday: the Eels have the worst defence of any team in the top 10, conceding less than 16 points just twice. Last week was the first time the Broncos have leaked less than 18 in their past six games.

Parramatta, $1.60 favourites, is an outstanding 28-9 at CommBank Stadium (5-1 this season). The Broncos are 4-4 away from Suncorp in 2022 but all signs point to this one going down to the wire as both teams strive to confirm they’re the real deal.
