Past Gen.G players within Korean Contenders

on May 24th of 2022, Gen.G the parent company of the Overwatch League team the Seoul Dynasty announced that they would not be participating in or having their Korean contenders team any longer. This was a sad moment for Tiger Nation who had watched many of the Gen.G Contenders’ players grow to join Overwatch League teams, and wanted to follow the current roster as well. With the Summer 2022 Contenders season in swing, there are so many remnants of Gen.G Contenders still on the scene. Here is a look at why Tiger Nation, or any fans of Gen.G Contenders, should continue to watch the Korean Contenders.

02 Blast

O2 Blast just signed this season a contract alongside the San Francisco Shock. They are one of the most dominant teams on the Korean contender’s scene. The Seoul Dynasty’s own Junwoo ‘Vindaim’ Park came from the O2 roster. Ironically, one of the most well-known Gen.G players is still too young to play in the Overwatch League.  Somyung ‘Bliss’ Kim had been a long-time support player on the Gen.G roster. Even when there were hints of Gen.G not having a contender roster he was loaned out, but never given up until this past May. Bliss is a top-tier main support. If anything watching him thrive on O2 is reason enough to tune in to watch him play. He will be a big name in the Overwatch League in the future.

Talon Esports

Talon Esports has produced many Overwatch League players such as NYXL Mionjae ‘Kellan’ Kim, Minjun ‘Piggy’ Shin, Myuingheum ‘Jjanggu’ Cho, Patiphan ‘Patiphan’ Chaiwong, and Rakhoon ‘Develop’ Chae to name a few. To recognize Bliss’ name in Korean contenders means that Seungyong ‘TOPDRAGON’ Jeong would also be familiar. This DPS player, just like Bliss, was loaned out to Incendia Esports in 2021 instead of being let go because of his potential. He is still just turning of age in the coming year and could be a big pick up with his proficiency on Genji and other flex DPS heroes.

Team Diamond

Team Diamond is not as well established as the first two teams being around for only a few seasons. But any fans of the Seoul Dynasty will recognize this team, as Jinhyuk ‘Miro’ Gong was a coach for this team. Names like Youngwoo ‘Flora’ Lim, Minseo ‘Guriyo’ Kang, Jun ‘AlphaYi’ Kim, and Donghyun ‘Unique’ Yoo are scattered across their former player list.

Team Diamond currently has an ex-Seoul Dynasty member on their squad. Jemin ‘Illicit’ Park wasn’t able to shine as he should have with teammates of Byungsun ‘Fleta’ Kim and Junyoung ‘Profit’ Park being those major carry teammates. But Illicit has another shot on Team Diamond to show what he has to offer. Euiseong ‘Cena’ Son or as Gen.G fans would know him as Quasid is also on the team. This team is made up of some underdogs but has the potential to show up some of the higher-ranking teams.

Sin Prisa Gaming

Sin Prisa Gaming (SPG) is the least known of all the organizations talked out. But as an organization, they have put a lot of faith into Gen.G and their players. They have had eight past Gen.G members on their team, and currently hold seven on their active roster. Many of the 2022 Gen.G Roster were picked up by Sin Prisa Gaming. The DPS Duo of Beomseo ‘Varipick’ Jung and Jihwan ‘Ade’ Lee were picked up alongside tank lineup Junseo ‘DOX’ Kim and Dongeun ‘Rozanne’ Lee who was let go on July 15th 2022.

It was just announced that Gen.G contender to Overwatch League player Hyeonwoo ‘Toyou’ Lim will be joining the team. Toyou has shown his dedication and hard work throughout his time in the Overwatch League. It is exciting to see him hopefully be able to re-prove his skills to make it up to tier 1 again in seasons to come.

Soomin ‘Leeseomin’ Lee was a Gen.G 2022 contender player and is joined by a familiar name. Before Gyumin ‘Sanguinar’ Lim was on the London Spitfire, he was on the T3 Gen.G team Gen.B. His raw talent was picked up upon and was called up to the big league. Since departing from the London Spitfire he has shown good results with his other teams.

Soomin ‘Wonsoomin’ Won was a player for Gen.G, but has turned coach for the Sin Prisa Gaming team. This is a huge lineup of Gen.G talent housed under Sin Prisa Gaming. Any fan who wanted to see how Gen.G could’ve done can look towards Sin Prisa Gaming, though they are missing TOPDRAGON and Bliss who would be arguably the star players on the old Gen.G roster.

Korean Contenders

Korean Contenders have so many past Gen.G and Seoul Dynasty players this season. The last, seventh day, of A-side, will be broadcasted on August 7th on Youtube at 2am PST/4am CST/5am EST. After that from August 12 to September 27th will be the Summer series of the B-side. Come watch and support all the contenders’ players either live or through rewatching vods.
