With only four players left, the semifinals of the WTA Sydney Tennis Classic gets underway later today. The first semifinal is set for 9:30 pm ET, with Badosa and Kasatkina’s semifinal scheduled for 3:00 am ET on Friday.

Fifth seed Badosa enters the match as the slight favorite over unseeded Kasatkina. But the Russian is coming off an impressive win over second seed Garbine Muguruza to earn her spot in the semis.

The Favorite to Move On

There’s no denying that Badosa had a tough draw, and has defeated three impressive opponents to earn her spot in the semifinals. But after an early round exit in Adelaide last week, the Spaniard has been able to bounce back quite impressively.

She opened her tournament up against Jelena Ostapenko, where she won in straight sets. From there, she faced Ajla Tomljanovic, winning in straight sets once again. Most recently, she took down Belinda Bencic in three sets.

In her quarterfinal match against Bencic, she recorded 11 aces on route to her 7(8)-6(6), 3-6, 6-3 win. She did record eight double faults on top on that, but Bencic managed only four aces to seven double faults. The two played a tight match due to similar playing styles, but it was Badosa who managed to have a bit more in her to capture the win.

She’ll now look towards Kasatkina, who’s coming off a huge win.

Kasatkina Upsets Muguruza

Kasatkina has claimed that this is the best start of her career, ever. And she might be right.

The 24-year old has been the headline since upsetting second seed Muguruza in straight sets, winning 6-4, 6-4 in just under an hour and a half. This win evened out their head-to-head record at 3-3.

Big win for Daria Kasatkina, defeating Garbine Muguruza 64 64 to advance to the Sydney semifinals.

Kasatkina just completely outplayed her opponent, no question. The Russian dominated, winning 65 percent of her first-serve points, with Muguruza only able to record 57 percent.

With this win, the Russian reaches her second straight semifinal and record her ninth career Top 5 win.

Having not played each other before, there isn’t much to go off of heading into this match.

One’s mental strength and discipline will be big factors here for this semifinal match.

Kasatkina is coming off a huge win, a Top 5 win, which she hasn’t been able to record since 2018. She’ll have to bring herself back and stay calm in this match, otherwise Badosa knows how to use that in her favor.

Badosa is an aggressive players, but Kasatkina should be able to counter the strong attacks with her variety that she’s put on display this week.

Both players are strong and are playing competitive tennis. It might come down to Badosa’s composure, or it could be Kasatkina’s variety that she implements, throwing her opponent off.
