PGL Major Stockholm: 2 teams head to the New Legends stage, 2 teams leave the competition in Day 2

12 other teams meanwhile continue their battles to see who will join the top 2 teams.

Round 3 of the Swiss Stage is over for PGL Major Stockholm, and the surprises keep on coming. One team gave everyone a shock for qualifying to New Legends, and one team found their second wind. Unfortunately, two teams were disqualified due to low points accrued.

Round 3 Recap

High Matches

Virtus.pro vs FaZe Clan

As one of the first Bo3 matches in the tournament, FaZe was unphased by the team from CIS. With CS royalty olofmeister and karrigan in the team, they proved that they are still king of the hill. In the first game, the team started strong as CT with 5 consecutive wins in the first 5 rounds of the map. They did concede a few rounds to VP, but they finished the first half with a healthy lead. In the second half, VP came back with a string of wins, which culminated in a 14-14 draw in the 28th round, but FaZe clawed back and won the final three rounds to win the map.

In the second match, it seemed that VP had lost some of their steam, as FaZe just steamrolled them with win after win, with the second map ending just after 22 rounds.

FaZe Clan won the match 2-0.

Heroic vs Copenhagen Flames

While not a dark horse, the rise of Copenhagen Flames in the Challenger rounds is a story to behold. As a Contender, they had to work extra hard to try and rise to the occasion – and work hard they did. In the first map, they essentially steamrolled Heroic, currently the 8th rank in the European standings. Heroic did bounce back from the defeat by winning the second map.

It is in the third map where everything fell into place for Copenhagen Flames. While Heroic was leading in the first half of the map, the Danish team pulled up their pants and won almost all of the rounds as CT, with back-to-back wins.

The Copenhagen Flames won 2-1.

With the wins, both FaZe Clan and Copenhagen Flames go through to the New Legends stage as the first seeds from the New Challengers stage.

Low Matches

Astralis  vs GODSENT

Fans were concerned that Astralis was not performing as best as they could – with this match, they showed what they truly can be as they faced off GODSENT. As if a sleeping giant awakening, at last, Astralis dominated the two maps that were played, and easily won. We may just see the defending champion Astralis play at last.

Astralis won 2-0.

paiN Gaming vs Sharks Esports

This match was one of the epic matches thus far in the competition. Sharks were leading in map 2, Ancient, 15-9 at the 24th round, but paIN seemed to discover a second or third wind when they won the next 5 rounds, which pushed the match to extended time. Not only once, but twice.

At the end that push cemented the win for paIN as they played the third map and subsequently grabbed a win over Shark Esports.

paIN Gaming won 2-1.

Unfortunately, with the losses, GODSENT and Shark Esports have been eliminated from Major Stockholm.

Mid matches

Team Spirit vs TyLoo

Spirit is on fire as they beat TYLOO 16-3 to grab another point for the Swiss system ladder. While TYLO tried their hard to grab wins in the match, unfortunately, Spirit was just too good in this match and regrettably, the sole Asian rep had to concede defeat in round 19.

BIG vs Renegades

A similar story played out in the match between BIG and Renegades as we saw the German team dominate the first half, conceding only two matches to the Australians. While the lads at Renegade managed to score back-to-back wins in the second half, it is not enough to overcome the points deficit – thus BIG won, well, big, with a score of 16-9.

ENCE vs MOUZ

Both teams played a good game, with an almost even distribution of wins between the two halves. But ENCE’s wins in the last few matches of the round sealed the deal and MOUZ had to acknowledge the loss here. ENCE won 16-11.

Movistar Riders vs Entropiq

One of the rising stars of the CS: GO world, Entropiq was ruling the match throughout the first half with wins after wins as CT. Even as they transitioned to terrorists, they still led the match with ease – leaving Movistar Riders well behind. The result was a win for Entropiq – 16-12.
