PGL Major Stockholm: Day 7 is where the fairy tale run ends for two teams

Reigning champion Astralis was also eliminated after a bad run through the Major.

At the end of the full week of competition, we saw a couple of the fairy tale runs ended for two teams, and reality set in for them. At the same time, three teams were eliminated which includes a reigning Major champion.

There is only one more round left before the playoffs begin where the last three teams will be decided.

Round 4 recap

High Matches

Entropiq vs FURIA

The matchup between Entropiq and FURIA was one of showing who has control of the map. In the three maps that were played, the wins were passed between the two teams like a ping pong match. In the first map, Vertigo, FURIA set the stage as they dominated both halves of the map as CT and Terrorists. Entropiq didn’t manage to find any chances to grab wins for the map, leading them to a loss of 6-16. In the second map Nuke, Entropiq found a new flame being lit under them and they managed to turn their luck around to win the map.

Unfortunately for them, FURIA also found a new source of fury in the third map, Ancient. Entropiq gave a valiant effort to be a good opposition, but they were running high on points difference by round 25 that it just took FURIA only two more wins to grab the point for the round, and the win overall.

FURIA won 2-1.

Ninjas in Pyjamas  vs Gambit Esports

Gambit continued their momentum of winning when they met up with NiP. The win against VP gave them the confidence to be aggressive in the two maps played in this match. On Dust2, NiP was leading in the first half, but once the second half came around, it was like a switch was thrown in the Gambit camp. They won 12 out of the possible 15 rounds almost back-to-back, conceding only two wins to NiP, leading to a win of 16-13.

In Inferno, Gambit’s rampage looked to be ongoing, as they grabbed win after win versus NiP. The map ended in just 22 rounds, giving the win to Gambit once again.

Gambit Esports won 2-0.

Heroic  vs Copenhagen Flames

Another team that saw their good run at the Majors stop short, Copenhagen Flames was matched up with Heroic in Round 4. The match between the two teams from the Challengers stage was hard to watch as both sides were pressed to show why they deserved to compete still. In map 1, Nuke, Heroic pummeled CPH with a score of 16-4. Not the best of starts for the Danish lads, even though they opened the match with a win. The CPH boys did rise in the second map Ancient where they won 16-13 in a hard-fought battle.

Map 3, Overpass was where it all crumbled down. While CPH did give a good fight for heroic, the other Danish team proved to be superior as they won the map 16-11.

Heroic won 2-1.

Low Matches

FaZe Clan vs Team Liquid

After the shocking losses in the last two rounds of Legends, FaZe wanted to prove that they are a legends team and they are ready to fight for the spot. In their match against Team Liquid, the more experienced team led the way in Map 1, Inferno. The points difference was big enough that the match ended at round 24, with FaZe winning 16-8.

In Map 2, Mirage, it went to overtime as Team Liquid tried their very best to keep themselves in the game. But with olofmeister and karrigan in the team, FaZe was too strong to beat, and they won 22-19 in overtime.

FaZe Clan won 2-0.

Astralis vs Team Vitality

As one of the matches that everyone was watching, this was Astralis’ last chance to stay in the competition. They were matched up with Team Vitality, and it is obvious that Vitality has the vigour to keep themselves in the competition. In the first map, Nuke, Vitality stole the show as they consistently racked in the points in both halves to win 16-10. It was the opposite for map 2, Vertigo, where Astralis was leading the pack, even though Vitality grabbed enough points in the second half to almost even up the score at round 29. Astralis won 16-14 as they grabbed the last point in round 30.

Map 3, Dust2, however, saw Vitality fight back and the two teams almost tied up at round 27, but Vitality then pulled a rabbit out of a hat and took the last two rounds to win 16-13.

Vitality won 2-1.

Virtus.pro  vs MOUZ

The last match of round 4 of the Legends stage saw Virtus.pro meeting MOUZ. Both teams were tied at 2 wins and 1 loss in the competition so far, and this match will determine who will move on and who will be packing their bags to go home. In map 1, Ancient, MOUZ led the way by sheer domination as the Terrorist in the first half, with VP trying to gram wins in the second half. Unfortunately, the point deficit was too big that MOUZ just needed three wins in the second half to win 16-9. In Map 2, the tables were flipped. VP dominated and took the game from MOUZ’s hands with a 16-3 win.

In map 3, Vertigo, the two teams were playing neck to neck and at one point no one knew who would win the match. MOUZ did an excellent job of catching up that from trailing 10-1 at round 11, they managed to turn it around to be a leader of 13-10 at round 23. The match then went into overdrive from then onwards, until a time extension was called. In the end, VP showed that they were stronger and won the match 22-18 after 10 extra rounds.

Virtus.pro won 2-1.

With the wins, FURIA, Gambit and Heroic are on to the next stage of the competition. Unfortunately for Team Liquid, MOUZ and Astralis, this is the end of the line for them in the Majors Stockholm. It is regrettable to see the reigning champion Astralis being booted out of the competition but this also means that we can expect a new champion to emerge from the Champions stage, which is set to start in a couple of days.
