Philadelphia Eagles’ Player Spotlight: Jimmy Moreland

According to reports, the Philadelphia Eagles have claimed former Texans cornerback Jimmy Moreland off Waivers on Monday. This adds more depth at cornerback, as the Eagles just signed veteran Pro Bowler James Bradberry not too long before this. This Eagles team has improved a lot throughout the offseason as they have become a legitimate playoff team. This article will give you everything you need know about the Eagles newest cornerback Jimmy Moreland.

Mooreland at JMU

Moreland played for the James Madison Dukes for all four years of his college career and had a lot of success. During his junior year he played in 15 games while starting in 13. The former Dukes cornerback had 68 total tackles, eight interceptions, two fumble recoveries and 14 pass break ups. As one can see, Moreland was a ball hawk for this Dukes’ team. The interception total is ranked second in JMU’s history for a single season. He finished his junior year earning the honor of First Team All-CAA Cornerback.

He was an absolute monster during his senior season in 2018. Moreland was one of the best players on the field week in and week out. His strength again was in the turnover department. He had five interceptions that year, but that is not the most impressive part. He took three of those interceptions back for touchdowns, which totaled 217 yards in returns. In addition, he had 58 total tackles, 1.5 sacks, and one forced fumble. This season earned him many honors but the most significant one was being the HERO Sports Fans Defensive Player of the Year. It is safe to say Moreland was one of the best Cornerbacks in JMU history.

His career so far in the NFL

Moreland was drafted in the second round of the NFL Draft in 2019 by the Washington Commanders. He got a substantial amount of playing time during his rookie season in 2019. Moreland started five games that year and played in 14 games. He had 42 total tackles and four pass deflections. This was a good start to his NFL career as he showed that he can produce in the NFL. In 2020, Moreland improved and had a better year. He had a total of 44 tackles, one interception and one pass deflection.

After the 2020 season, Moreland was released by Washington and was signed by the Houston Texans. Unfortunately, Moreland did not do a whole lot in 2021 as he did not get much playing time. He only had two tackles all season. On the bright side, moving teams seems like the best thing that can happen for Moreland as he will get an opportunity to show off his skills on a new team.

What role will he be in for the Eagles?

If Moreland does make the team, he will more than likely be behind James Bradberry on the depth chart. He will also be competing against Avonte Maddox for playing time, who has shown that he can hold his own in his four years with the Eagles. Moreland does have his work cut out for him to become a main player for this Eagles defense. In addition, the newly signed Eagles cornerback has not yet shown off his ball-hawking ability in the NFL, which is one of his best strengths. If the Eagles coaching staff can coach him up, then he definitely has the potential to be a successful cornerback in the NFL. This concludes this spotlight on the Philadelphia Eagles newest signing Jimmy Moreland.
