Premier League betting tips
Leicester vs. Arsenal
James Maddison scored his first goal in eight months to secure all three points for Leicester in a win at Brentford last time out. After a disjointed start to the season, the Foxes seem to be finding their form in terms of results, with no defeat in four EPL games & three successive wins in all competitions scoring 10 goals in the process, also progressing through to the EFL cup Quarter Finals via penalties on Wednesday evening.
The Gunners bring even better form in to this Saturday lunchtime clash, now unbeaten in six EPL clashes since the 5-0 humiliation at the Etihad in late August which left them bottom, and with their midweek defeat of Leeds in the EFL Cup have won six and drawn two of their last eight games in all competitions. Three more points could see Mikel Arteta’s side end the weekend in the top 5.
Two in form sides, and therefore I’m going for the points being shared.
Verdict: Leicester, Draw
Liverpool vs. Brighton
Liverpool and Mo Salah in particular, look unstoppable on current form. The Egyptian’s hat-trick at Old Trafford last weekend saw him score for a 10th successive fixture for the Anfield club and is the first goal scorer to double figures in the EPL this season – where after winning back-to-back road trips 5-0 he and his colleagues return to home comforts in front of the adoring Kop.
Only the top three, Chelsea, Liverpool and Man City, have conceded fewer than Brighton’s nine league goals so far this season with four of those coming last time out against Pep’s men. Graham Potter was “so proud” of his team but he knows they will have to show even more “spirit and quality” to get anything out of this trip to Merseyside.
When Liverpool click like they have been not many in the land can live with them – I expect a similar outcome to last weekend for the Seagulls.
Verdict: Liverpool
Manchester City vs. Crystal Palace
Pep Guardiola and his team lost their first EFL Cup tie since October 26th 2016 this week a run stretching an incredible 21 games – but with nine changes to the starting lineup that had blitzed Brighton at the weekend we shouldn’t read too much in to that result and it was a penalty shoot-out defeat that done for them in the end.
After last minute heartbreak on his return to the Emirates a couple of weeks ago, Patrick Vieira visits the club where he brought the curtain down on his playing career. His side will have to be at their best if they are to extend their run of four successive EPL draws as the Eagles aim to be the first away side to score at the Etihad this season.
The big guns to return to Pep’s starting eleven and secure another home win.
Verdict: Manchester City
Newcastle vs. Chelsea
Newcastle collected their first point under their new owners thanks to a fantastic overhead strike from Callum Wilson last time out while interim manager Graeme Jones has confirmed he will be in charge here against the European champions as his current employers continue the search for a permanent replacement for Steve Bruce.
It couldn’t have been any easier for Chelsea last weekend as they smashed seven goals past a hapless Norwich – including Mason Mount firing his maiden EPL hat-trick to keep the Blues at the top of the table. With a vociferous home crowd to contend with this should prove a tougher assignment but will be buoyed by demonstrating they can score goals despite the absence of injured duo, Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner. In fact, with goals for Mount and Callum Hudson-Odoi against the Canaries, it incredibly meant all 11 starting outfield players had found the net already this season – 14 different players have already scored for Thomas Tuchel’s side.
As shown with the 3-2 loss to Spurs, having new super rich owners and 50,000 Geordies behind them it doesn’t guarantee a home win – and Chelsea are another level above – this has to be an away win.
Verdict: Chelsea
Watford vs. Southampton
What an entertaining start to Claudio Ranieri’s reign at Vicarage Road – but what else should we expect! Five goals conceded in the debut defeat to Liverpool followed up by five goals of their own in a come from behind victory on a visit to the blue half of Merseyside. If the Tinkerman can continue to get a tune out of hat-trick hero Josh King he will believe he has a great chance of keeping his Hornets in this division.
Southampton have a great record here – avoiding defeat in their last seven visits stretching back to 2009 and having finally found some cutting edge in the final third, mainly through loan star Armando Broja, the Saints will look to exploit a generous home defence who haven’t kept a clean sheet in nine straight EPL home games.
Expect goals….and any result here!
Verdict: Watford, Draw, Southampton
Burnley vs. Brentford
It seems a bit like Groundhog Day when listening to Sean Dyche in his post-match interviews this season – with the general tone being pleased with his side’s performances, but disappointed with mistakes and results. The Clarets are one of three sides still searching for a league win in the top flight this season and have not won in 14 EPL games at Turf Moor, drawing seven, losing seven, not scoring more than once in any of those games and only two in the last six in front of their own fans.
The Bees have lost back-to-back games in the league for the first time this season and will look to arrest that slide here to avoid the murmurings of the pre-season relegation favourites reverting to type. However, both those defeats were at home, albeit to Leicester and league leaders Chelsea – who they actually dominated with xG of 1.5 v 0.3 – and Thomas Frank’s side are unbeaten on the road this season.
Brentford rubber stamped their away credentials with a midweek victory over Stoke in the EFL Cup and I’m taking them to extend Burnley’s wretched home record.
Verdict: Draw, Brentford
Tottenham vs. Manchester United
Spurs seem to be two paces forward and one back this season, disappointingly losing to London rivals West Ham last week after back-to-back league wins. They did return to winning ways as a strong lineup including Harry Kane managed a hard fought EFL cup win over Burnley in midweek and will hope to exploit a fragile United side here.
There’s not much else to say about Manchester United after their very well documented 5-0 drubbing by Liverpool at Old Trafford last weekend. It could be a case of beware the wounded animal as they make the trip to the Capital as two under pressure manager go head-to-head. Away sides dominated these clashes last season, winning both meetings, scoring nine and only letting in two.
The Red Devils incredible 29 game unbeaten away league run finally came to an end in their last trip at Leicester but I can see them starting a new one here by taking all three points.
Verdict: Draw, Manchester United
Norwich vs. Leeds
Look up the words abject, spineless and pathetic in the dictionary and there should be a picture of Norwich’s performance against Chelsea last week to illustrate all of them! A meek surrender where they never came close to laying a glove on the league leaders was totally unacceptable – with the tone going in to the game seeming to be that they felt they had no chance – they proved that to be correct in emphatic style. Other than replacing the suspended Ben Gibson surely Daniel Farke will shake things up for the visit of this fragile looking Leeds side as the clock ticks down on his time in charge of the Canaries.
Sides must be dreading being the first to be defeated by the relentlessly mocked bottom side but Marcelo Bielsa will see this as the perfect opportunity to kick-start his side’s season. A 94th minute Rodrigo penalty rescued a point last weekend with just seconds remaining while the midweek EFL cup defeat to Arsenal was at least good for the return of key man Kalvin Phillips who played the full 90.
A lot depends on Farke’s approach here – keeping the 5-3-2 formation that earned his side their only points of the season with back-to-back goalless draws or his favoured 4-2-3-1 system which earned plaudits and double promotion from the Championship. However, I feel Leeds can take this, especially if they can get Raphinha fit enough to start, with the home crowd ready to turn nasty if things don’t go their way early on.
Verdict: Leeds
Aston Villa vs. West Ham
The pressure is starting to build on Dean Smith after three consecutive league defeats, with the abject nature of their loss to Arsenal last Friday and the fact they conceded three goals for a second game running will have all of a Villa persuasion concerned. After describing his side’s first half performance at the Emirates as “very poor” and unrecognisable as the team he has come to know – they will have to be stronger against this tough West Ham side after admitting to being dominated physically by the Gunners.
While their hosts have had eight days between games West Ham were on midweek cup duty as they became the first side in five years to eliminate Manchester City from the EFL Cup and making it four wins on the spin albeit with the help of a penalty shoot-out on this occasion. The Hammers are so well organised and go in to this game in fourth place with the luxury of bringing key duo Mikel Antonio and Declan Rice back in to the starting eleven.
Two sides with contrasting current form can only lead us to one conclusion – Moyes’ men to march on.
Verdict: Draw, West Ham
Wolves vs. Everton
Wolves were seconds away from winning a fourth consecutive Premier League game for the first time ever, until a 94th minute Rodrigo penalty snatched a point for Leeds, meaning the Old Gold drew a league game for the first time in 12. Bruno Lage has certainly found a solution to Wolves’ striking issues of last season, with Hwang Hee-Chan having had four shots on target this campaign – and he has scored with all of them.
Rafa Benitez was left at a loss to explain his sides horror show against newly promoted Watford last weekend – seemingly comfortable at 2-1 up with a little over 10 minutes remaining before a catalogue of errors led to an incredible turnaround and 5-2 defeat. The Goodison Park boos said it all and having been an initially unpopular choice Benitez will need to turn around a dip in form which has seen three defeats in the last five league outings as well as elimination from the EFL cup at the hands of Championship side QPR.
Having Richarlison back is a boost for the Toffees but Wolves are looking in good shape right now and I’m taking them to do enough to claim all three points here.
Verdict: Wolves, Draw
