PS5 Prices Going Up In Select Markets (Including Southeast Asia) Due To Inflation

PlayStation announced that select markets outside of the US will have an increased price for the PS5. Affected markets include, but not limited to, Europe, the UK, Japan, China, Australia, Mexico and Canada.

In Japan, the price increase will be effective starting September 15. The prices for the PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition (without the Blu-ray disc drive) are below:

  • PS5 – ¥60,478 yen (previously ¥49,980)
  • PS5 Digital Edition – 49,478 yen (¥39,980)

To put into context, the price increase of the PS5 in Japan is roughly RM344, and the PS5 Digital Edition is around RM330.

Sony Interactive Entertainment president Jim Ryan stated on the PlayStation Blog that this is due to “high global inflation rates, as well as adverse currency trends”.

The knock-on effect of the current pandemic, an economic recession across the globe, has not only caused a supply issue on the next-gen console, but also made it unfeasible to be sold at its current retail price it looks like.
