PS5 Will Be Adding Game Folders, 1440p Output

PlayStation is rolling out a new beta software update for the PS5 to beta participants today. This gives us a look at some upcoming features coming to the console.

One of the weird omissions was the ability to organise games into folders, which was available on PS4. For the PS5, players can make gamelists (essentially game folders) to organise your game collection.

At the moment, you can have 15 gamelists, each containing 100 games. Games in the “Your Collection” tab can be added into gamelists, so that includes disc games, digital games, and for the countries that have the feature, streaming titles.

The other big addition PS5 owners can expect to see soon is 1440p output. The PS5 currently can output at 720p, 1080p, and 2160p (4K). The addition of 1440p is nice, and it makes sense as there are plenty of gaming monitors in the market currently that are targeting 1440p. These monitors can now be used for more than just plugged into a gaming PC.

Plus, if you’re playing games running at native 4K, you can decide to display at 1440p and benefit from better anti-aliasing (smoother and less pixely curves).

Other features being tested out in this PS5 software update beta are:

  • the ability to compare 3D audio and stereo audio
  • easier access to in-progress activities
  • party members can request share screen
  • join a party from a game notification
  • view new friend’s profile after accepted friend request
  • send stickers and voice messages from game base
