Rainbow Six Siege Year 7 Season 1 details new Operator and map

Rainbow Six Siege Year 7 Season 1 is fast approaching, Ubisoft giving fans their very first look at what’s to come in its 2022 roadmap for the popular shooter.

Y7S1 is titled Demon Veil and, like previous seasonal updates, it introduces new content as well as improved game systems, technical refinements, and Operator reworks.

Having hosted the Six Invitational 2022 over the past week in Stockholm, Ubisoft made a slew of Year 7 announcements during a 30-minute long panel.

Headlining the first major content drop of 2022 we have Azami, a new defender from Japan equipped with the unique Kiba Barrier gadget. Although shaped like a deadly kunai, these projectiles are used to fortify your team’s position. Throw a Kiba and it will embed into a surface, creating a bulletproof shield, allowing you to patch up holes in your defence.

What else do you need to know about Azami? She’s a medium speed, medium health Operator, and her loadout features a 9X19SVN or an ACS12 as a primary weapon and a D-50 as a secondary weapon.

There’s a reason why Azami looks a bit more flash than her Rainbow Six comrades. In its attempts to keep the game both feeling and looking fresh, Ubisoft is upgrading Operator character models with a focus on their faces. Expect enhanced shaders and an overall higher polygon count to inject your favourite characters with more life and detail.

For the first time in three years, Rainbow Six Siege is also getting a new map. Since releasing Outback in 2019, the development has meticulously visited each of the existing maps, redesigning them to flow better and optimising their competitive play viability.

Emerald Plains will transport players to a new location set in Ireland. This stylish country club is destined to be shot and blown apart when it arrives during an upcoming midseason update.

There’s even more being packed in Demon Veil. The attacker repick feature will return to help shake up the prep phase for competitive play. Meanwhile, at the casual end of the spectrum, Year 7 will introduce Team Deathmatch as a permanent game mode. Newcomers and lapsed players should find this extremely useful as they experiment with loadout and (re)learn the ropes.

One thing Ubisoft did not confirm was a Y7S1 release date. Fans shouldn’t have to wait long – give the team’s track record, it’s likely the new season will go live in mid-March.
