Fans of point-and-click adventure games (that are okay with the new artstyle) will soon get to Return To Monkey Island, the release date has been revealed.

The unexpected sequel to The Secret Of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge gets its release date announced on Opening Night Live at Gamescom 2022.

The new trailer has our man, Stan S. Stanman, pitching a sale for Return To Monkey Island.

Pre-orders are now open and for those who do, you will get a “beautiful Horse Armour” in your inventory that the fine print says “Please note that the horse armour has no practical use in-game and in no way will contribute to the gameplay, puzzles, or narrative of Return To Monkey Island.”

The Monkey Island series is famous for nailing its comedy gags in a time when adventure games are mostly serious business. Ron Gilbert and David Grossman, two of the main developers behind the first two Monkey Island games, return to develop this new entry.

Return To Monkey Island has a completely new look, which not all fans of the original are onboard with, but if the little glimpses of gameplay we see here, with a lot of callbacks to the earlier games, is any indication this could be a good silly romp. It looks very likely that the game will actually add a useless horse armour (a dig at one of the earliest controversies of DLC) that just sits there in the inventory for the whole game because it’s a pre-order bonus.

Return To Monkey Island will be out on September 19, or International Talk Like A Pirate Day, for the PC (Steam) and Nintendo Switch.
