Return To Monkey Island Will Release On Consoles, Coming First To Switch

The June 2022 Nintendo Direct Mini is not where you would first expect to see gameplay of Return To Monkey Island, but here we are.

The upcoming game spearheaded by original writer Ron Gilbert and being published by Devolver Digital and developed in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games is still dead set to arrive this year, and also on consoles.

The short trailer is enough to remind old fans of the classic point-and-click adventure series with many familiar faces making a return. Even boat salesman Stan S. Stanman is somehow here, let alone the mainstays like LeChuck and Elaine Marley (who might be a playable character?). Even some old gags from the earlier games are referenced.

Another note on our main man Stan, he is confirmed to have his jacket pattern texture remains in place as seen on the official website. There’s a whole dialogue tree that you can click on and see what he says.

The trailer also gives us a better look at the new 2D artstyle. Fans have mixed feelings about the more stylised look, but judge it objectively and it’s still some pretty nice artwork. Guybrush Threepwood is all ragged and jaded after not learning the secret of Monkey Island for so long.

Return To Monkey Island still lacks a firm release date, but its sails remain set for a 2022 release on PC and Nintendo Switch.
