Robert Kraft’s Oxygen Esports Fills 12th CDL Slot

New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft has reportedly secured the 12th team slot of the Call of Duty League. To fill the opening, the Overwatch League team Boston Uprising has merged with Boston-based Oxygen Esports. This will mend the void left by OpTic Texas and NRG, as a result of the OpTic Chicago and Dallas Empire merger.

Oxygen Esports

The Washington Justice ownership group has been expressing interest in the Call of Duty League slot for quite some time. There was even a plan to sign the predetermined roster of PaulEhx, Methodz, Vivid, and TJHaly. As for who will make up the Boston roster, former KC Pioneers’ Doug “Censor” Martin has been a more than viable option. Additionally, TJHaly, Methodz, and PaulEhx are all still free agents.

Kraft’s own Boston Uprising has yet to place first in any Overwatch League tournaments since 2017. Oxygen, meanwhile, has fielded multiple esports teams in various games. In light of the merger and a $20 million investment round partly from the Gronkowski family, Oxygen will be moving their headquarters to Foxborough, Massachusetts.

Call of Duty League

Lately, Call of Duty League esports players have allegedly been offered full-ride scholarships to compete in the college league. Fans and players alike still hope for a better Challengers amateur pipeline league. However, with its season start delayed and the withdrawal of most organizations’ support, it is not going in the right direction.

In addition to this turmoil, Kraft’s Boston team will be entering the scene with one of CoD’s lesser favored entries. Vanguard, yet another title set in WWII, has garnered much criticism from the pro community. OpTic Hitch called the game a “spit in the face to competitive Call of Duty” on Twitter, a statement supported by players and hosts like Octane, FaZe ZooMaa, and FaZe aBeZy.

With the rise of the Halo Infinite esports scene, Call of Duty players have also been left with less, comparatively. OpTic Hitch also ranted about esports skins on Twitter, alongside LAG Gunless and SlasheR, as well as OpTic CEO HECZ. Regardless of these concerns, the Vanguard 2022 season now has its 12 teams, with newcomers Oxygen Esports.
