Seattle Mariners Acquire Luis Castillo From Cincinnati Reds

The Seattle Mariners are finalizing a deal to acquire starting pitcher Luis Castillo from the Cincinnati Reds according to Jeff Passan.

Castillo, 29, is in his sixth season of Major League Baseball, which have all come with the Cincinnati Reds. He has a 44-53 record and a 3.62 ERA in his career, which is impressive given that Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati is widely known as a hitter’s park. This season, he has a 4-4 record with a 2.86 ERA.

With the Mariners’ record at 54-46, they will hope that this move helps them make a playoff push then helps them compete for a title. They are currently tied for fifth in all of baseball with a team ERA of 3.58, so getting Castillo adds to one of their strengths as a team.

Cincinnati has clearly gone into rebuilding mode after cutting salary heading into the season. That included sending Jesse Winker and Eugenio Suarez to the Mariners during the offseason. They currently sit at 38-61 and have already traded away players for prospects.

There is not yet word on the return that the Reds will receive for Castillo.
