SEGA Files Trademark for Sonic Frontiers, Presumably the Previously-Teased Sonic Game Coming in 2022

Back in May, SEGA teased a new Sonic the Hedgehog video game pegged for release in 2022, which was rumored to be titled Sonic Rangers at the time. However, it looks like a 4Chan leak claiming that Sonic Rangers is in fact called Sonic Frontiers is true because SEGA just filed a trademark for Sonic Frontiers in Japan, per Gematsu.

We have no details about the title beyond the initial tease, but considering SEGA hinted at a 2022 release, it’s likely that the company is gearing up to reveal something soon.

“Since this title is still mid-development there is nothing I can speak to, but I did want to say that the development team has been spending their time to do something new and challenging,” Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka told Sonic Stadium in June. “Through a lot of trial and error the team is looking to present to everyone a new Sonic game, and I hope your warm support of their work can motivate them to really deliver against that challenge.”

In its recent financial report, SEGA said that Sonic the Hedgehog movie’s success opened up the IP to a wider audience, which ultimately led to a “significant” increase in sales and gave “great impetus to the whole Sonic franchise.”

“We are aiming to grow our existing mainstay IPs as global brands and achieve the growth targets of the current medium-term plan,” the company said of its future goals while revealing that it has been offered “numerous business opportunities” for the Sonic franchise.
