- The ATP Cup, the first ATP event of the year, gets under way in Sydney, Australia
- With notables like Novak Djokovic and Andrey Rublev late scratches, Italy is the favorite
- Read on for a preview of the event, and a look at Canada vs USA Jan. 1
If it feels as though the 2021 season ended last week it … kind of did.
But the 2022 season dawns this weekend Down Under in Australia, with the ATP Cup taking centre stage in Sydney.
2022 ATP Cup Odds
Country | Odds |
---|---|
Italy | +250 |
Germany | +340 |
Spain | +350 |
USA | +800 |
Canada | +900 |
Great Britain | +1000 |

ATP Cup Field Feast or Famine
The criteria for a country entering is the ranking of its best player. So Team Greece, for example, is world No. 4 Stefanos Tsitsipas and his obscure, low-ranked countrymen including younger brother Petros.
And the top two players are mandated to play singles. So if you’re Karen Khachanov, with three countrymen ranked ahead of you despite being top 30, you wouldn’t expect to see the court.
So Khachanov opted to compete in a regular ATP event to get Australian Open match practice.

All three of world No. 2 Daniil Medvedev’s teammates from the 2021 victory (picture above) are out because of the coronavirus.
So the team is Medvedev and No. 167 Roman Safiullin in second spot and No. 269 Evgeny Karlovskiy as the third player.
And, of course, Novak Djokovic pulled out for Serbia.
That’s why the two countries are not among the top six favorites (at +1600 and +3500, respectively).

Meanwhile, despite having the No. 11 and No. 14 players in the world, Canada is surprisingly far down the list of favorites. With Germany, Great Britain and the U.S. in their pool, there are obstacles.
First up for Canada is the USA.
That tie is set to start on Jan. 1 at 6pm ET.
Auger-Aliassime vs Fritz Odds
Player | Spread | Moneyline | Total |
---|---|---|---|
Félix Auger-Aliassime (CAN) | -1.5 (-125) | -165 | O 23.5 (-105) |
Taylor Fritz (CAN) | +1.5 (-115) | +125 | U 23.5 (-125) |
First Meeting for Auger-Aliassime and Fritz
Despite a nearly three-year age difference, No. 1s Auger-Aliassime and Fritz have similar career prize money, and sported similar win-loss records last season.
But Auger-Aliassime has been in the top 10.
Auger-Aliassime vs Fritz Head-to-Head
21 (Aug. 8, 2000) | Age | 24 (Oct. 28, 1997) |
Montreal, Canada | Birthplace | Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. |
6-4 | Height | 6-4 |
0 | Career ATP Singles Titles | 1 |
No.10 (Nov. 15, 2021) | Career High Ranking | No. 23 (Nov. 8, 2021) |
No. 11 | Current Ranking | No. 23 |
$5,276,302 | Career Prize Money | $5,491.658 |
38-24 | 2021 Won/Loss record | 34-22 |
0 | Career Head to Head | 0 |
It’s the first meeting between the two.
Both are essentially power hitters from the baseline. Fritz can serve harder; Auger-Aliassime has a lot more spin on his ball. And the Canadian is the superior mover.
Fritz has the advantage of having had a couple of matches at the Abu Dhabi exhibition a few weeks ago.
Best Bet: Fritz in three sets (+425)
May-December Matchup for Shapovalov and Isner
American John Isner will turn 37 early in the 2022 clay-court season.
And in recent years, since COVID (and now a father of three), to respect an aging nearly seven-foot long body, Isner has played rather sparingly.
But on hard court, with his huge serve, he doesn’t need a lot of match practice to get in a groove.
Shapovalov vs Isner Odds
Player | Spread | Moneyline | Total |
---|---|---|---|
Denis Shapovalov (CAN) | -2.5 (+105) | -230 | O 25.5 (-120) |
John Isner (USA) | +2.5 (-155) | +170 | U 25.5 (-120) |
Shapovalov’s COVID Isolation a Setback
The 22-year-old Canadian was lucky in the sense that after being one of the first players to arrive in Australia, he tested positive before Christmas Day.
— Denis Shapovalov (@denis_shapo) December 25, 2021
When the isolation rules in New South Wales loosened a bit and allowed him to be sprung after seven days if he felt well, he didn’t have to withdraw from the ATP Cup.
But his preseason prep was compromised.
Shapovalov vs Isner Head-to-Head
22 (April15, 1999) | Age | 36 (April 26, 1985) |
Tel Aviv, Israel | Birthplace | Greensboro, NC |
6-1 | Height | 6-11 |
1 | Career ATP Singles Titles | 16 |
No. 10 (Sept. 21, 2020) | Career High Ranking | No. 8 (July 16, 2018) |
No. 14 | Current Ranking | No. 24 |
$7,548,797 | Career Prize Money | $20,112,284 |
30-23 | 2021 Won/Loss record | 23-13 |
0 | Career Head to Head | 0 |
Shapovalov Not Used to the Big Serve
Shapovalov has never played Isner. And he doesn’t have a ton of experience against the big servers.
He beat American Reilly Opelka, on grass 4+ long years ago in a third-set tiebreak. He had a win over a then 41-year-old Ivo Karlovic almost four years ago.
That’s it.
But in Shapovalov’s favour is that on any given point, against anyone’s serve, he has the ability to guess right, connect, and hit a screaming winner.
Best Bet: First set to a tiebreak (+220)
