Sniper Elite 5 targets a May release date

Rebellion has announced that Sniper Elite 5 will be releasing on 26th May 2022, the latest chapter in Karl Fairburne’s illustrious WW2 career coming out for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Oh, and it’s going straight into Xbox Game Pass when it does come out.

The new trailer dives into the game’s storyline, as Karl uncovers an Axis plot codenamed Operation Kraken which could turn the tide of war. You’ll have to take Karl behind enemy lines once more, pitting him against Abelard Möller, an Axis Obergruppenführer, and seeking to stop his dastardly plan.

Expect the game to build on the excellent gameplay found within Sniper Elite 4, all of which can (as always) be played in 2 player online co-op. For this game, Rebellion has leant on photogrammetric techniques to add even more immersive realism to the sandbox level environments. Heading online, there’s a new Invasion Mode, which allows you to drop into someone else’s campaign play through as an Axis Sniper, with high rewards on offer for whoever comes out on top. Oh, and there’s also the usual suite of PvP multiplayer modes for up to 16 players.

If you pre-order the game, then you’ll get to hop into another Hitler-hunting romp in a new Target Führer campaign called Wolf Mountain. This will task you with infiltrating the Berghof, Hitler’s private mountain retreat in the Bavarian Alps, which is crawling with heavily armed personal guard, and a bunch  of collectables. Will you actually get to assassinate Hitler this time? Probably not…

Meanwhile, the Deluxe Edition will bundle in a season pass which promises the following content:

  • 2 Campaign Missions
  • 2 Weapon skin packs
  • 2 Character Packs
  • 6 Weapon Packs

Sniper Elite 5’s development was confirmed all the way back in 2019, but Rebellion has taken their time with this particular project. In the meantime, they’ve remastered Sniper Elite V2, brought that game, Sniper Elite 3 and Sniper Elite 4 to the Nintendo Switch, and delivered a compelling spin-off in Sniper Elite VR. They’ve also enhanced Sniper Elite 4 for the new generation of consoles.
