Sonic Origins has been officially revealed and it has stupid DLC [Update]

The Sonic Origins game remake has been officially revealed by Sega with a 23rd June release date across PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PC. There’s also multiple versions of the game release, with some content locked to DLC packs, in what is a baffling business decision by Sega. Read on to find out more.

Sonic Origins will provide two ways to play these original side-scrolling adventures of the blue blur, with the 16-bit graphics from the early 90s one option alongside new high-resolution art, wide-screen resolutions, new animated opening and ending cinematics and more. While the visuals are enhanced, they are (similar to Sonic Mania) absolutely in keeping with the series’ 16-bit… origins.

There’s also some gameplay changes. Classic mode will have limited lives, while Anniversary mode (with the enhanced visuals) will have unlimited lives. There will also be new areas to explore, missions to collect coins to unlock new content, challenges, and Special Stages through the in-game Museum.

There’s even new areas to explore, expanding the games, and a new Anniversary mode to play.

Disappointingly, it seems that Sega is locking some of this behind pre-order bonuses, special editions and DLC.

Sonic Origins Versions DLC

While the Digital Deluxe edition is only £4 more (at £36.98) than the £32.99 price of the base release, it feels heckin’ cheeky to be locking small bonuses like “Character Animations during Music Islands” and “Letterbox Backgrounds” behind a extra fee.

Sonic Origins will include includes the following games:

  • Sonic the Hedgehog (1991)
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992)
  • Sonic CD (1993)
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles (1994)

The Sonic Origins remakes were announced in May 2021 as part of Sega’s Sonic Central presentation, which delved into how the company was gearing up to celebrate the blue blur’s 30th anniversary. Since then we’ve had precious little to go on, but it looks like they’re about to make a bit announcement, with this new leak and the game’s PC version receiving a rating in South Korea.

Sega’s been enjoying a bit of a renaissance for their original mascot, thanks to the film franchise going from strength to strength, a relatively well received remaster of Sonic Colors, and the build up to a new era of Sonic games with Sonic Frontiers set to release in late 2022.
