Strategy RPG Classic Tactics Ogre Is Getting A New Remake, Releasing This November

Square Enix has announced Tactics Ogre Reborn, a new remake of the classic tactical RPG Tactics Ogre.

Tactics Ogre was first released in 1995 for the SNES and later received a PSP release (and technically was a remake) in 2010. That title, in Japan, was called Tactics Ogre: Wheel Of Fortune.

Tactics Ogre (full title Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together) is an influential title that helped defined the strategy tactics/ strategy RPG genre. This game, originally published by Quest Corporation preceded Final Fantasy Tactics, the game by the key developers behind Tactics Ogre after they moved to Square. Quest Corporation was then acquired by Square Enix in 2002.

Ogre Tactics: Reborn will have an updated UI and HD graphics, recreated based on the original title. The UI is not only at a higher definition, but has been streamlined to be easier to understand.

This remake will also have fully-voice cutscenes, remastered sound effects and rerecorded live music. Players can also switch between English or Japanese voice-overs.

There are also some changes to the gameplay systems as well. Tactics Ogre: Reborn features a new character levelling system. Instead of a class-based levelling system (seen in the PSP release, Tactics Ogre: Wheel Of Fortune) where all units level up for the same class, now it’s a unit-by-unit level system. The AI has been overhauled where their tactics will change based on the layout of the battlefield and the current state of battle.

Plus, expect some playability (quality-of-life) improvements as well. Auto-saves, faster battle pace, improvements to controls and the aforementioned UI improvements are some that you can expect to see with this remake.

Ogre Tactics: Reborn will be released on November 11 for the PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch, and on November 12 for PC (Steam) in Asia. Square Enix’s slate of game releases for the end of 2022 continues to grow enormous.
