Street Fighter 6 has been officially announced

Capcom has announced Street Fighter 6, the next generation of its long-running fighting game series. There’s very little to go on from the teaser trailer, but more will be announced and revealed in summer 2022.

The teaser trailer takes the series’ art style in a new direction, blending in more realistic tones to the cel shaded art style that has featured in the last two iterations. Then again, it’s just a teaser, and there’s certainly some flashes of more distinctive artsiness.

What we do know is that Ryu is now a very, very wide boy and looks like he could take on Dudley, Eunice and Franklin all at once – this comment won’t make any sense after we’re out of the UK’s current week of stormy weather. Opposite him? Well, it’s new lad Luke, who was introduced at the end of Street Fighter V’s lifespan. An MMA fighter, he was touted at the time being as part of the future of the franchise with Capcom noting that Luke has a “bright future ahead of him” and “will help expand the world of Street Fighter and provide fans with a glimpse into the future.”

Rumours suggest that Street Fighter VI might be hitting the big red reset button on the franchise. A certain character in Street Fight V says that they need to “start it all over again, from zero,” which maybe a reference to Street Fighter Alpha series and some time travel shenanigans, though the teaser trailer looks more like a fight between the old and the new. Maybe Ryu’s come out of retirement for one last fight, like a kind of Rocky Balboa story arc?

Alongside the Street Fighter 6 announcement, Capcom also revealed the Capcom Fighting Collection, which bundles together all five Darkstalkers games, Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix, Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo and more, all of which have been enhanced with online rollback netcode.  The Capcom Fighting Collection will be released on 24th June, for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC via steam.
