Super Bowl 2022: Movie And TV Show Trailers To Expect

On Sunday, February 13, the Los Angeles Rams will take on the Cincinnati Bengals for the NFL Championship. And while many people will watch the big game for the football, many will also watch it for the commercials, trailers, and halftime show.

This year promises to show off some trailers for highly-anticipated movies and TV shows. While only a couple of trailers have been confirmed so far, there are plenty of big name ad spots we could see based on speculation because of when these properties are coming out.

It will be a busy evening of trailers, football, and ads that will all be talked about at the virtual watercooler the next day. We’re rounding up all the trailers and potential trailers that will arrive that day. As the week continues, as more trailers are confirmed, we’ll keep this list updated. One trailer that won’t be new at the Super Bowl–if it airs–is Lightyear, as that debuted earlier this week.

Additionally, make sure to come back to GameSpot on Sunday for coverage of all the breaking trailers and big news to come out of the Super Bowl.

The Rings of Power

Release date: September 2

Amazon’s Lord of the Rings TV show is getting a trailer at the Super Bowl, as the streaming service confirmed the news on Monday morning. This is the biggest production to date for Amazon, with the first season costing a reported $465 million. Recently, character posters were revealed for the show, which shows off a lot of hands.

Black Adam

Release date: July 29

Finally, The Rock has come back to the Super Bowl. Dwayne Johnson confirmed he’ll be at this year’s NFL Championship game on Twitter, and with that tweet. Within the tweet, he also mentioned “electrifying,” which could be a reference to his upcoming DC movie Black Adam. It could also just be a callback to his days as a WWE wrestler. Back in October, we got our first look at the upcoming movie with a very brief scene. The Super Bowl is a smart time to release the entire trailer for the movie.

Jurassic World: Dominion

Release date: June 10

NBC is hosting this year’s Super Bowl, and in addition, the network has been hosting the Olympics, and a few of the ads that have aired during the Winter Games have dinosaurs in them–tying into the upcoming Jurassic World movie. Director Colin Trevorrow recently posted on Instagram an image of a panel with buttons with “Unsafe” lit up, along with the caption “Won’t be long now.” Seeing a full trailer for this movie is a good bet.

Nope

Release Date: July 22

The last time we’ve had news about Jordan Peele’s next horror movie, Nope, was the summer of 2021 when we saw the first poster for the mysterious movie and the cast, which features Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, and Steven Yeun. A new teaser released for the movie lets us know to make sure to pay attention this Sunday.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Release date: May 6

Spinning out of Doctor Strange’s actions in Spider-Man: No Way Home, the Doctor Strange sequel is three months away from hitting theaters. The first teaser for the film arrived back in December. There has yet to be a full trailer yet for the show. There have been no rumblings about a trailer premiering, but since Disney typically gets multiple ad spots during the big game, and Doctor Strange 2 is Marvel’s next theatrical release, this is a safe bet.

Moon Knight

Release date: March 30

The next MCU TV series is none other than Moon Knight. The series arrives next month, and we’ve had one trailer already. Much like how we mentioned with Obi-Wan, an ad during the Super Bowl will put a lot of eyes on Disney+, and there’s no better way to get people excited than showing off two properties coming to the streaming service. Plus, Moon Knight looks really rad.

Obi-Wan Kenobi

Release date: 2022

There have been lots of rumors about the Obi-Wan TV show release date. There are a few unconfirmed rumors stating the Disney+ series will premiere this May. Nothing has been confirmed by Disney or Star Wars at this point. Filming wrapped back in September, and in November, we saw a sizzle reel during Disney+ Day. There is no better place to release the first trailer for the series than the Super Bowl. You’ll have a ton of eyes on your product, and you’ll be able to reach a new audience with this trailer–one that may not have Disney+ yet.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Release date: April 8

Back in December, the first trailer for Sonic 2 debuted at the Game Awards. With a theatrical release less than two months away, there’s a very good chance the next trailer will debut either during the game or the preshow.

Stranger Things

Release date: Spring 2022

Spring officially begins in a little more than a month. That means we have a month to four months before the new season of Stranger Things arrives. In 2017, Netflix aired the Season 2 trailer for Stranger Things, and it was one of the most-talked about videos from the evening. Will this happen again? Considering the last trailer or teaser we got from Stranger Things was back in November, this is the perfect time for a new one.

Minions: The Rise of Gru

Release date: July 1

Originally, Minions: The Rise of Gru was going to be released in the summer of 2020, but like other movies, it was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, it’s finally arriving this July, and there is a very good chance we’ll see a new trailer as a reminder of this movie’s existence, two years after it was originally supposed to release.

The Lost City

Release date: March 25

Sandra Bullock plays a romance novelist who is kidnapped in order to find a lost city, and Channing Tatem plays the Fabio-esque cover model for her books–and he’s on the hunt to save her. The film also stars Daniel Radcliff as the villain. The first trailer arrived back in December, so Paramount may do a big push for this comedy at the Super Bowl.
