Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for September 15th, 2022. It’s 10:41 PM as I write this intro. I woke up at 6:00 AM today to go to the Tokyo Game Show and somehow yesterday I thought preparing everything that was on the schedule for today would be sufficient to get this article out after the Show without much trouble. I was gravely, gravely mistaken. New releases, we got ’em. Sales, we got ’em. Sanity, we are running short on. Let’s go.

New Releases

Bear and Breakfast ($19.99)

Okay yeah, this is a lot of fun. You play as a bear who is building and managing a bed and breakfast in the woods. It’s a management sim, but if you usually bounce off of those because they’re a bit too stressful, you’ll enjoy the chill pace of this one. Of course, if you relish the high-pressure stakes and pacing of more challenging games in the genre, you’re probably not going to have a great time here. It’s a slow one. Soak it in. Enjoy the groan-worthy jokes. If you like the sound of the concept and don’t mind that it’s very easy-going, you’ll probably enjoy the game. It’s certainly well-loved over on Steam, so I’m not the only one who likes it.

Absolute Tactics: Daughters of Mercy ($24.99)

This is a rather decent-looking turn-based tactical RPG about a guy named Huxley and his dog Max. They put together a team of allies and battle a mysterious army that is invading their realm. Yes, it has a job class system. Yes, your characters can dual class. It even mixes things up now and then with some larger scale battles where you have dozens of units on the battlefield at once. It always takes some time to know how good a game like this really is and I haven’t put in that time yet, but this certainly has an air of promise to it.

Last Beat Enhanced ($9.99)

I feel like we are reaching a point where there are so many good beat-em-ups on Switch that it takes something cool or unique to stand out. Last Beat Enhanced has a somewhat low-detail pixel art style that admittedly looks a bit different from the usual 16-bit take we see. There are five different characters to use as you smash your way through nine stages of action, and you can either play alone or with a friend in local co-op multiplayer.

Silent Sector ($12.99)

Oh hey, it’s one of these. You know. You play as a space ship in a top-down, free-roaming space and need to do whatever to make money. Mining, trading, battling enemies, and so on. You can use that money to pay your debt and also get some upgrades here and there. I enjoy this kind of thing if it is done well enough. And judging by the reviews on other platforms, this one does what it’s doing just fine. So yes, Space Miner fans, fall in.

Arcade Archives Rompers ($7.99)

Here’s a lesser-known entry from Bandai Namco’s extensive back catalog of arcade games. Rompers is a top-down maze game of sorts where you need to seek out all the keys on each level while avoiding the enemies. You do have a means of defense in the form of a shove that can be used to push over walls onto your foes. It’s a fun game, and one we don’t see pop up too often. Hamster has done its usual fine work on bringing this to the Switch, so if you’re game to try it, know that you are getting it in a great form.

Wayward Strand ($19.99)

This is a narrative adventure of sorts set on a flying hospital. Neat. Your mom works there, and she has asked you to come and spend a weekend there to help out. For your part, you want to check the place out so you can write an article about it for your school newspaper. Explore the hospital and interact with the people as the time passes. Everyone has their own schedule that they’ll keep to, so if you miss a chance to encounter someone or a certain situation, that’s too bad. You’ll have to make the hard choices about where and when you want to spend your time, and with a structure like that you know there’s some replay value here. Seems quite fascinating.

Ankora: Lost Days ($19.99)

From the publisher that brought us Summer in Mara and Deiland: Pocket Planet Edition comes this survival adventure game. It features crafting! Exploration! Building! Terraforming! And yes, this is narratively tied with those other two games. The main character here is Mun, and it’s set before the other titles. She’s just a rookie explorer here, and is bound to get into all kinds of trouble as a result. I’m going to venture out on a limb here and say that if you enjoyed Summer in Mara and Deiland, you’ll probably be satisfied with this one, too.

Mozart Requiem ($29.99)

You play as Mozart, doing the stuff Mozart is famous for. You know, finding clues and solving crimes in 18th century Prague! Murder is afoot, and only Mozart has the smarts to catch the villainous curs behind it all in this point-and-click style adventure game. Unravel a conspiracy and solve puzzles, all within the span of a single day. Originally released on computers back in 2008, this is a lightly enhanced re-release that doesn’t really fix any of the many problems found in the original game. But hey, at least the music is good?

Dungeons 3 – Nintendo Switch Edition ($39.99)

Ah, thank goodness. It would be no good if the Nintendo Switch Edition had ended up in the wrong place, but here it is, just where it should be. Anyway, this is a spin on the good ol’ Dungeon Keeper concept. Build your dungeon and fend off heroes that try to invade. We’re not exactly drowning in this kind of game so it’s middling quality may be sufficient for your needs. This version includes a couple of expansion packs plus all the latest content updates, so you should be all set for plenty of hours of defeating would-be legends.

Foretales ($19.99)

Not pony tales or cotton tales or even duck tales. Foretales, a-woo-woo! It’s a card game where you play as a bird thief. Um, not someone who steals birds. A bird that steals things. The cards aren’t just used for battles but for a variety of other actions as well. The narrative elements are strong here and there are branching paths that will ultimately take you to one of multiple endings. It’s certainly a bit different from the norm in this genre, and its sense of style is on point. The proof of the pudding is in the eating, though, and I haven’t been able to dip my spoon into this game yet.

Innocence Island ($19.99)

This seems awfully ambitious. I hope the final game can pull off what it’s going for. It’s an open world action adventure game where you play as someone seeking the power of a legendary artifact. You’ve somehow forgotten your skills, but you can learn them again by watching someone perform them. You have some freedom in how you approach the game. You can be peaceful or violent, and depending on your way of doing things, the island will evolve accordingly. It looks alright from what I’ve seen, but there are a million ways this kind of game can go wrong so I suggest waiting for some hands-on impressions before jumping in.

Japanese Escape Games The Mansion of Tricks ($9.99)

It’s another one of these, folks. This time the setting is a mansion, which is a decent enough setting for an escape room game. Solve the puzzles… or die! Probably! I can’t really back that up. Sorry. I’ll be going now.

Dead Rain: New Zombie Virus ($10.99)

A side-scrolling action game making its way over from mobile platforms, where it seems to have gathered a small following. Explore each stage and kill lots of different zombies with a variety of weapons. It doesn’t look like the fanciest of dining, but I know some folks can’t get enough of killing zombies, and this certainly is a means of doing so.

fault – StP – LightKravte ($17.99)

This latest chapter in the fault series of visual novels is a more-or-less standalone prequel story, and a rather beefy one at that. Which isn’t to say that people who played the previous games won’t recognize some faces and places, but you can just jump in on this one if you like and you’ll be fine. An ordinary son of a farmer seeks to become a painter, but no matter how hard he practices his skills just don’t match up with his peers. Right when things look their bleakest, something happens that changes his life. What? What could it be? You’ll have to play the game to find out.

Paddles ($5.99)

Pong versus a computer is kind of boring. Pong versus another human is a little better. Pong with four players is a spicy meatball. Paddles runs with that concept as far as it can, offering up local multiplayer for up to four players. There are twenty-four distinct levels to play on, and a variety of different ball types that will throw a wrench into things. You can play against the computer if you want, but I’m going to go out on a limb for a second time in this article and say this should really only be on your radar if you do the whole couch gaming party thing now and then.

Queen’s Garden – Sakura Season ($19.99)

This puzzle game comes to us by way of the folks behind the Secrets of Magic series, offering much the same sort of deal. Play match-3 stages, earn decorations for your garden, and play the odd minigame to break things up. There are one hundred and twenty stages to play in total. The price feels a touch steep considering you can play this game for free on your mobile device, but if you want to play on your Switch who am I to tell you that you can’t? Just some clown, that’s who.

Saomi ($3.99)

Another game with Celeste on its mind, I think. Play through more than fifty challenging platforming stages in search of treasure. Use your jump, double jump, wall slide, and air dash to weave your way through many treacherous hazards. An affordable bit of precision platforming for those with the appetite but lacking the wallet to match.

Poly Link Origins ($2.99)

Rotate the pieces until you see the right picture. You get hundreds of puzzles to solve. If you like this kind of puzzle, it’s a decent enough value.

Gunslingers & Zombies ($8.99)

Credit for trying something here, I suppose. It’s a turn-based tactical game where you play as a bunch of gunslingers fending on some truly odd zombies. It has a really cheap look to it, but it’s not like this kind of game needs shiny visuals to work. There are a lot of really great choices in this genre on the Switch, but I can honestly say none of them feature cowboys battling zombie buffaloes.

Maggie the Magnet ($4.99)

This is a physics-based puzzle game with more than one hundred and fifty levels to play. The controls are simple enough. You can activate your character’s magnetism by holding the button, and turn it off by releasing it. With this ability, plus the ever faithful law of gravity, you need to navigate the hazards of each stage. Seems like it could be decent fun for a fiver.

Gold Crusader ($4.99)

The name Polygon Art does not infuse one with confidence about the potential quality of a game. This one is a dungeon crawl of sorts where you fight through procedurally-generated dungeons and try to get back the gold that was stolen from you, with interest. You can craft new weapons as you go. Absolutely hideous art style. It’s cheap, at least.

Animals Transport Simulator – Car Driving & Parking Games Real Zoo Park ($4.99)

Midnight Works drops another one of its dookies on us today. You’re transporting animals across ten levels. Just look at that screenshot. That is some real crap right there. This game includes the usual Midnight Works features: a purple monkey dishwasher title and handheld mode support only.

Eagle Simulator – Bird Zoo Park Flight Sky Pilot Driving ($3.99)

Ugh, of course there’s another one. Just like the last one, no support for anything but handheld mode. Choose from five different eagles and fly around. Pretty obviously biting off of Aery and its ilk, but it somehow makes them look like AAA titles.
