SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Suikoden I&II HD’ Announced, More Genesis Games Added, Plus Today’s Releases and Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for September 16th, 2022. In today’s article, we’ve got a couple of news stories to check out. After that, we get into the remaining releases for this wild week, with summaries of each of the games hitting the eShop today. Somehow there are even more new sales to comb through, and we’ve of course got the list of sales set to expire over the weekend. Let’s get to it!

Konami Announces ‘Suikoden I&II HD Remaster’ for 2023 Release

In recent years, Konami seems to have been getting into rereleasing some of its finer classics via various collections. Today, at the Tokyo Game Show, the company announced its latest: Suikoden I&II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars. It includes spiffed-up versions of the first two games in the JRPG series, with new portraits for each of the characters done by the original artist. This release will be coming to a variety of platforms including the Nintendo Switch in 2023.

More SEGA Genesis Games Are Now Available for NSO Expansion Pack Subscribers

Additions to the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive app for Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack subscribers have been rolling in roughly every nine or ten weeks this year, so we were just about due for some new ones. And here they are! Update your app and you’ll have access to three fresh games. The gorgeous side-scrolling Game Arts action-platformer Alisia Dragoon, the wacky run-and-gun-and-worm-whip Earthworm Jim, and the compelling action-adventure Beyond Oasis are all ready and waiting for you to enjoy.

New Releases

Unichrome: A 1-Bit Unicorn Adventure ($14.99)

The eShop description for this run-and-gun action game name-drops Atari, but its Steam description makes far more accurate references to games like Mega Man, Metal Slug, and Sunset Riders. Anyway, you’re a unicorn seeking color and violence is the only way you know how to make that happen. You get more than forty levels to play, set across eight different worlds. There are sixteen bosses to battle, and you’ve got a rather impressive arsenal of sixteen tools you can use to rain devastation upon your foes. Due to the game’s art style, those who are photosensitive may want to keep away. Otherwise, it looks quite decent.

The Dark Prophecy ($9.99)

A point-and-click style adventure game about a medieval boy on a quest to his kingdom from witches. It’s trying to be like a Lucasarts adventure, but as the meme says, one does not simply walk into Mordor. The puzzles aren’t very well-designed, the English script is rough, and it’s way shorter than it feels like it should be. A hard game to recommend with how many strong options are available on Switch.

Devoured by Darkness ($5.99)

A puzzle-platformer with dark themes and broad references to mental health issues? Well slap my back and call me Francis! It’s not greyscale at least. I’ll be thankful for the little things. The main gimmick here is your character’s ability to use telekinesis to move things. Mostly boxes. Seems okay for what it is, but I’m personally rather weary of what it is.

Plunder Panic ($19.99)

This is basically a pirate-flavored take on Killer Queen Black. Up to eight players offline and twelve players online battle against each other, trying to win via one of three different victory conditions. It seems like it could be fun but it really is contingent on you either having some friends to play with or on a random community forming around it online. If you can’t be certain of at least one of those two things, then I can’t see this being all that enjoyable.

Accident ($14.99)

Well, this is an interesting concept. You’re playing as a journalist investigating various car accident case files. You sort of jump into each one and try to play it out like one of the emergency responders, putting out fires and trying to save victims. It’s more puzzle game than anything else, and it starts to get repetitive after a while despite not being a terribly long affair. But the novelty certainly carries it a distance, and that may be enough for you.

Brutal Chase Turbo ($13.99)

This one is pretty obvious inspired by the likes of Taito’s Chase HQ and sees you chasing down criminals in your fancy police car. Bash them with your car until their life meter is emptied, and you’ll earn some credits. Just like real life! There are more than one hundred levels spread across nine different cities, and you’ll get to drive five different upgradable cars. Taito doesn’t exactly re-release Chase HQ very often, so this might help you get your fix.

Space Raiders in Space ($12.99)

You know you’re in for a treat when the eShop description has an old meme in it. Anyway, this is more or less a roguelite tower defense game. Command your crew, gather resources, build defenses, then try to fend off the swarms of aliens. It has a cool comic book style and reviews on other platforms seem somewhat positive if not overly so. If nothing else you can really feel the personal touch of the developers in the game, and that always helps a game stand out a bit to me.

Kitten’s Head Football ($7.99)

We’ve seen many variants of this before on the eShop, and if it’s not from a template then it might as well be. Try to knock the ball into the opponent’s goal using your large-meloned feline. There are unlockable items, several different locations, and some power-ups you can use. It supports local multiplayer, which is probably the only way to wring much entertainment from it. At least the art is better than those Giant Foot Soccer games or what-have-you.

Blobufo ($0.99)

It’s a one-dollar platformer with fifteen levels. About as plain as it gets, but for a buck I suppose it doesn’t need to be fancy. I’ll buy a delicious Snickers bar instead.

Puzzle by Nikoli S Sudoku ($4.99)

If you need another way to play Sudoku on your Switch, this is certainly one.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

A few more games to add to the massive list that went up yesterday. Square Enix was a little late to the party, but here they are with their usual spread of fine games to choose from. If you’ve had your eye on Jets’n’Guns 2, this is the lowest price it has seen since launch, and if you’d prefer your shooters a little more, um, Genesis-y, Gynoug and Gleylancer are also discounted. There’s a fair bit in the weekend outbox, with City Connection’s latest round of sales finishing up. Check those lists, but also keep yesterday’s titles in mind. There’s only so much money to go around, after all.

Presumably you’ll all be doing something more fun. I hope you all have a great weekend, and as always, thanks for reading!
