SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Triangle Strategy’, ‘What Lies in the Multiverse’, and Today’s Other New Releases and Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for March 4th, 2022. Well, there turned out to be quite a few new releases today. The big one is Triangle Strategy, and it indeed just what it looked to be. There are some other interesting games to consider, like What Lies in the Multiverse and Knight’s Try. We’ve got summaries of all of them, good and bad, plus the latest lists of new sales and expiring discounts. Let’s get to business!

New Releases

Triangle Strategy ($59.99)

We don’t have Final Fantasy Tactics on Switch yet, and that is very unfortunate. But as of today, we do have an extremely wordy Square Enix isometric turn-based strategy game to enjoy. Triangle Strategy is the latest game to get the HD-2D treatment first seen in Octopath Traveler. It presents a rich tale of conflict between three nations, with plenty of tactical battles to enjoy. One of the key gimmicks in this one is the Conviction system, wherein your decisions will contribute to one of three convictions: utility, morality, or liberty. How the story unfolds and who will or won’t join you depends on the levels you carry in each of those convictions, adding an element of replay value.

What Lies in the Multiverse ($14.99)

Here’s a puzzle-platformer where you play as a dimension-hopping kid named Kid who gets pulled into a huge mess by a weird guy in a top hat. Friends, never trust weird guys in top hats. Nothing good ever comes of it. Anyway, you need to progress through each area by using your ability to swap between universes. We’ve seen games with a similar gimmick, mechanically speaking. One version of the area has one thing you need, the other has another. You have to jump around at the right times to make use of both of them, sometimes with split-second timing. The level designs are good, the story is fairly interesting, and it plays well. A solid choice for those who enjoy this sort of affair.

Knight’s Try ($9.99)

You remember those affordable yet fun Toree 3D Nintendo 64-inspired platformers? Here’s another game from the same developer, and it’s another 3D platformer. It is absolutely hard as nails, but there’s a certain appeal to it. The presentation is… well, modest. Like Toree, it kind of has the look of a somewhat ugly Nintendo 64 game. But yeah, it’s a real challenge and one that I’m sure those who enjoyed Toree will want to take the developer up on.

Quest for Infamy ($9.99)

Pretty easy to spot what this game is inspired by. Rather than seeking glory like some silly hero, you’re on a quest to be as villainous as possible. This is an adventure game with RPG elements where you choose from three different character classes and follow their unique adventures through the world. There’s also a turn-based combat system that doesn’t work very well at all, which I suppose is paying homage correctly in some sense. Reviews for this one were mixed on PC, but it seems like fans of the old Sierra adventures may find some enjoyment in it.

Gunborg: Dark Matters ($14.99)

Oh hey, this looks really cool. It’s a side-scrolling action platformer where you wield a laser sword, an energy shield, and whatever weapons you can get your mitts on as you slay, jump, and rocket your way through an alien space ship. You can swipe the weapons off of every enemy you take down, but your basic tools can do the job fairly well. Of note is your shield, which you can use to deflect enemy bullets or shield bash foes as you see fit. Shield bashing is always awesome. There are also a bunch of dangerous traps to watch out for, and they’re just as likely to take you down as any of the aliens are. I haven’t been able to play this one yet, and that’s the only reason I’m not giving it a highlight. But I certainly will be playing it.

Operation Zeta ($9.99)

Operation Zeta is an epic space battle. Unfortunately for you, it’s an epic space battle that you’re on the losing end of. The enemy’s Death Laser is powering up and the only way you can survive is to quickly find all the parts you need to repair your ship and hightail it out of there. This is a roguelite game where you explore little planets for the parts you need, unlocking new characters, abilities, and upgrades as you go. You’ll sometimes need to help out aliens with quests to get the needed parts, but work fast: it’s ten minutes to total destruction. Reviews of this one on other platforms are somewhat middling, but if you like the look of it you may want to take a gamble.

Buck Bradley Comic Adventure ($6.99)

Buck has a problem. His friend has been changed into a mutant by an errant pink cloud, and he needs to help her become human again. This is an adventure game that uses a comic book-style presentation with panels and flipping pages. So yeah, don’t expect much animation. Solve the puzzles and meet a lot of wacky characters. That’s pretty much all there is to it.

Dr. Oil ($4.99)

Well, this has some serious five-dollar Switch platformer energy. Play as a sentient slice of butter named Dr. Oil as he attempts to take down Captain Seagull, an evil creature born when a normal boy was bitten by a seagull. Okay. Well, you get seventy-five stages set across five worlds, and I suspect Dr. Oil’s slippery frame will make him a dab hand at sliding around.

Offroad Night Racing ($12.99)

It’s another samey driving game from Pixelmob. The darts were thrown and they landed on “offroad” and “night”. Roam around a forest at night, solving missions. Drive your favorite from a selection of offroad vehicles. This will most likely be on sale for half-price within a month or so. Choose as you see fit.

ELO 1100 Chess ($3.99)

Pix Arts has another probable template flip for us today. It’s chess! Only playable in handheld, so it’s probably an Android template. Single-player only too, because who would ever want to play chess against another person? There are far better options to play chess on your Switch, I recommend exercising them.

Gav-Gav Odyssey ($4.99)

He who chases two hares catches neither. Important advice in many respects for life, and words that perhaps should have been heeded by the developer of this game. You get three different types of puzzle gameplay in Gav-Gav Odyssey, and some are definitely better than others. There’s a Sokoban style bit where you have to use chickens to press switches to open the way forward. There’s a Binary Land style bit where you’re controlling two dogs simultaneously through different mazes of spikes. And then there’s a bit where you need to strategically position falling crates in order to climb up. The first two are okay if not terribly original, while the third is a bit of a nightmare. You have to play them all if you want to beat the game, though.

Our Battle Has Just Begun! Episode 2 ($9.99)

The Hero and his party have left Alard and have stopped in at Jarn, a town whose trade depends on its nearby dungeons. Even though they planned on just chilling out, the group gets pulled into some nonsense that sees them heading into the dungeons to uncover their mysteries. Well, it wouldn’t be much of a game if they didn’t. This is a visual novel with some choices to make as you go along, and if you haven’t played the first episode yet you’ll want to do that first.

Shiorinokotoha – DarkReflections – ($19.99)

This is a suspense mystery visual novel whose chief gimmick seems to be that the characters are all voiced by VTubers. A private library is the scene of many grisly murders and other bizarre happenings. A man named Kenji Azuma falls asleep there and wakes up to find it has turned into some kind of prison. It’s up to Kenji to figure out what’s going before he and his friends become the next victims. Make your choices and suffer the consequences, unless you can somehow find the thin thread of hope in all of this. Seems pretty cool if you like your murder mysteries with a supernatural twist.

Mmm, yes. Overboard! is a very good little game from the folks at inkle. Worth picking up and playing, especially if you liked 80 Days. ININ Games is doing a sale, and that means great games like G-Darius HD, Cotton Reboot!, and Ninja Saviors are up for grabs at fantastic prices. Load up on them, chums. Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments and Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance are having what I believe are their first post-launch sales, too. Plenty to be found in there, so have fun treasure hunting. By contrast, the weekend outbox doesn’t have a whole ton going on. Check it if you want.
