Target Will Keep Its Stores Closed On Thanksgiving Permanently

One of the biggest retailers in America, Target, has announced plans to keep its stores closed on Thanksgiving Day going forward. The store–like many others across the retail landscape–previously opened its doors to shoppers on the holiday itself ahead of Black Friday.

Target CEO Brian Cornell said in an email to employees that the company’s decision in 2020 to run its Black Friday sales period longer, due in part to the pandemic, is now the “new standard,” according to the Associated Press. Some distribution centers and customer service locations will be staffed on Thanksgiving Day, but all stores will be closed.

Target and other retail shops have been criticized for being open on Thanksgiving Day, as it’s seen as a step too far that prevents people from spending time with family and friends.

The change in 2020 came about due in part to the pandemic, with many retailers opting to extend their shopping sales periods to limit crowds in stores. The National Retail Federation reported an 8% growth in total US spending last year, and it’s projected to grow even bigger in 2021.
