Team Aster derail OG's quest for consecutive Majors by eliminating them at the Arlington Major

Team Aster defeated OG 2-1 in an enthralling series to secure top 3 at the PGL Arlington Major. The reigning Major champions will have to settle for 4th place.

The penultimate day of the Arlington Major has ended and we have the final three teams of the Major that will compete on the last day – PSG.LGD, Team Spirit and Team Aster. The first two were guaranteed a spot on the last day since a couple of days before, but Team Aster had to battle it out in a hard fought series against OG to stake their claim in the top 3.

OG started the day with a 2-1 win over beastcoast to secure their place in the top 4. They would have to make it past Team Aster to make it to the last day. A thrilling series ensued when the two teams clashed, and the Chinese team came out on top 2-1, sending the defending Major champions home.

OGvsTeam Aster

Game 1 was perhaps the most straight forward game of the series. Aster out drafted OG, and were a step ahead of their opponents at all times in the games. The classic Chinese mid Pudge, which works as a great counter to Puck, wasn’t something OG were ready for. Team Aster drew first blood in the series with a comfortable win.

Game 2 is where things got interesting. Aster were in a commanding position with the Aegis on their Faceless Void, but a few mistakes in the Aegis fight led to OG finding a way back into the game. And this OG team embodies the two time winning OG team in one particular way – you give them an inch, and they’ll take a mile. That was exactly what they did, and the game turned on its head in no time. OG took game 2 with a trailing kill score of 17-16. Each of the first two games lasted around 35 minutes.

It has been a feature of the Arlington Major that the best Dota 2 in the playoffs is reserved for game 3, and that is exactly what happened in this series as well. Game 3 was an insanely back and forth battle, and even though OG trailed by a lot in the kill score, they somehow managed to keep the net worth difference in check. The net worth and the win probability alike went back and forth, but in the decisive fight, with no buybacks remaining, Aster managed to pull of the fight that secured the win, thanks to Refresher Orbs on their Faceless Void, Zeus and Brewmaster.

With that, OG’s run at the Arlington Major comes to an end. Once again playing with a standin, they managed to make it far at the Major, giving us some amazing displays of Dota 2. The team now travels to Malaysia for ESL One Malaysia, before getting some much deserved rest, having already qualified for The International 2022 (TI11).

Team Aster will move ahead in the tournament, with only Team Spirit now standing between them and an all Chinese grand finals. Team Spirit did beat them 2-0 in the upper bracket semifinals, but an experienced team like Aster will only learn and get better from a defeat like that. Can they make it past Team Spirit to challenge the other Chinese juggernaut, PSG.LGD? We will find out soon enough!
