The Cyberpunk 2077 next gen upgrade is out today with huge Patch 1.5 update

UPDATE: The patch notes have been released you can read them here!

As expected the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S upgrades for Cyberpunk 2077 have been announced and they are available to download today alongside a huge Patch 1.5 update! Hoping to convince people that the game is now ready for prime time, a free trial is also available, giving you the first five hours of the game.

CD Projekt Red’s stream to announce the upgrade’s availability showed off a mission in the game – Gig: An Inconvenient Killer – jumping between the different versions of the game, showing footage captured across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X. On PC and Xbox Series, the update and upgrade will be added as a simple patch download, but on PlayStation 5, you will have to download the PS5 version of the game from your library, and also perform a save file transfer.

You will get to choose between a performance mode which targets 60fps with a dynamic 4K, or implement ray tracing which, on PS5 and Xbox Series, is labelled as being for “ray-traced local shadows”, and the new systems get improved crowd reactions. There’s also spatial audio support on PS5 (previously added on Xbox), while the DualSense has… uh… haptic feedback for the sex scenes.

And one for Xbox Series X:

The new generation upgrade is coming alongside Patch 1.5 for more bug fixes and improvements, and some free DLC on top of that as well.

There’s reams of changes, from a total rework of the Perks system (which means you will need to respec your character if using an existing save), to cars having suspension systems and a better driving model, better combat AI, as well as improved AI panic in crowds (not on last-gen) and panic driving from AI, a better skip time mechanic, filters to the world map, and more. When picking up Gig missions from a Fixer, you’ll gradually gain better standing with them to unlock more missions and eventually earn some newly added rewards. The monetary rewards are bigger, as part of a wholesale rebalance of the game economy to make things more easily purchased.

If you were unhappy with the in-game appearance that you chose at the start of the game, you can now modify it at the mirror in your appartment, with many new colours for hairstyles available to you.

CDPR have updated Wilson’s gun shop, which they’re terming a free DLC addition. He has two new rifles with different appearances, there’s new scopes and muzzle brakes that help with recoil.

Their second free DLC is an in-game V makeover. You can now change your look after the start of the game by visiting the mirror in your apartment. There’s new hair styles, new hair colour choices, lip stick choices and more to choose from.

The third free DLC is the ability to mod your apartment from a screen within it, giving it a makeover, renovating it, etc. Not only that, but you can rent (with a one-time payment) four more apartments across the city. This will let you move to Corpo Plaza, Japan Town, Northside and Glen – you can do this from V’s apartment computer, or just from in-game menus.

Both the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S upgrades for Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt ended up being delayed until this year. These updates had already been delayed in the past. The original plan for Cyberpunk 2077’s release was for an upgrade to the current gen consoles mid-2021, but that was thrown out the window by the game’s disastrous launch. Then CDPR was hacked, knocking their initial bug fixing plans back by several weeks.

Cyberpunk 2077 played with some interesting RPG concepts, establishing a gritty, layered sci-fi world for players to lose themselves in. However, even before the game’s launch at the end of 2020, it was clear that the PS4 and Xbox One versions were suffering from major issues.

“As someone with a lifelong soft spot for the medium-specific charm of video game glitches, Cyberpunk 2077’s botched launch just ain’t it,” sad Alexis in out 6/10 review when the game launched. “Even overlooking the rushed rollout, after an eternity of being bludgeoned in the face with hyperbole, running through 2077 feels like five different games stitched together into an entertaining, passably decent, generic behemoth.”
