The Super Mario Bros. Movie surpasses Minions to become fourth-highest grossing animated film ever

Original (5/14): Based on the latest box office numbers for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, it’s now the fourth-highest grossing animated film ever. It took over that achievement from Minions.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie has earned $536 million domestically. In total, it’s collected $1.21 million.

It’s been a wave of continued success for The Super Mario Bros. Movie since its debut last month. In its first five days, the film earned $204.6 million in the United States and $377.2 million worldwide. Not much time passed before the total gross reached $500 million and the film became the biggest video game adaptation ever. It officially crossed the $1 billion mark a couple of weeks ago. We also recently heard that it became the second highest-grossing animated film of all time domestically.

Update (5/22): The Super Mario Bros. Movie is now at $1.248 billion in worldwide ticket sales. It’s now the third biggest animation film of all time, beating out The Incredibles.

Update (5/31): The Super Mario Bros. has cleared another milestone. The film has made $1.288 billion to surpass Frozen (which earned $1.284 billion) as the second-biggest animated movie of all time at the global box office. Frozen 2 is still at the very top with $1.45 billion.
