Toledo Betting Preview

Sophomore guard Ryan Rollins is staking his claim for MAC Player of the Year as he is averaging 19.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.9 steals a game.

Rollins had a big game Tuesday against Ball State with 24 points on 9-of-15 shooting to go with 10 rebounds and seven assists. It was second straight game with a double-double after having none in the first 16 games of the season.

The 20-point game was Rollins’ 10th, five of which have come in the last eight games.

Junior forward JT Shumate filled the stat columns with 16 points, four blocked shots, three assists and three steals.

Like Rollins, Shumate is contributing in many areas with averages of 15.4 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists. He has scored in double figures in 17 of the Rockets’ 18 games.

Junior forward Setric “Seth” Millner Jr. contributed 15 points and seven rebounds to bump his averages to 14.1 points and 6.1 rebounds.

Junior guard RayJ Dennis also had his second double-double of 2021-22, finishing with 12 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. It the fifth straight game scoring in double digits for Dennis, who is averaging 11.6 points, 5.9 rebounds and 3.6 assists after transferring from Boise State.

Toledo had a strong defensive game, holding Ball State to 36.6% (26 of 71) shooting, including 8 for 28 (28.6%) from three-point range. The Rockets were outrebounded 49-37 but offset that by committing just six turnovers.

Toledo has been a profitable team this season for wagerers as it is 12-5 against the spread, including 6-2 on the road.

Ohio Betting Outlook

Sophomore guard Mark Sears is also a serious MAC Player of the Year candidate with averages of 19.5 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.8 steals. He has scored in double figures in all 16 games.

Sears nearly had a double-double Tuesday in the win over Miami (Ohio) as he contributed 17 points, nine assists and three steals.

However, the star for the Bobcats was senior forward Ben Vander Plas, who scored a season high 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting, including 4 for 8 from three-point range. It was his second 20-point game of the season, both coming in the last three games.

Vander Plas did more than score, though, as he posted six rebounds, four steals and three assists. He is averaging 12.8 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.5 steals.

Jason Carter continued his strong return season to Athens with 13 points and five rebounds. After spending the last two seasons at Xavier, Carter is scoring 14.4 points and pulling down 7.1 rebounds a game and has scored in double figures in 15 of 16 games.

Carter played two seasons at Ohio before transferring when Saul Phillip;s was fired as coach and replaced by Jeff Boals. However, Boals welcomed Carter back this season.

Sophomore forward Sam Towns had nine rebounds for Ohio, which shot 50.9% (29 of 57) while holding Miami to 36.5% (19 of 52). The Bobcats also forced 15 turnovers.

Ohio is 8-7 overall and 4-4 at home ATS.

Toledo vs Ohio Prediction

Ohio broke a five-game losing streak against Toledo by upending the top-seeded Rockets 87-80 in the MAC Tournament semifinals last March in Cleveland.

Vander Pleas had 26 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for Ohio. Toledo got 26 points and nine rebounds from Millner.

Ohio has been the class of the MAC so far this season, but the oddsmakers have consistently underrated Toledo. Let’s take the Rockets with the points.
