Top 10 best eggs in video games, because we needed an Easter feature

Everyone loves a good easter egg in video games: little referential nuggets to a developer’s previous game, homages to an inspiration, or just daft little jokes thrown in for a laugh. But what if we get a bit more literal? What about games that just straight up have eggs in them?

Now that you’ve had a morning of chocolate egg hunting, let’s have a look at 10 of the best games with eggs in them, one way or another.

Dizzy

You can’t get much eggier than this franchise from the late 80s and early 90s. The Dizzy series was a platforming icon starring the anthropomorphic egg going on fairy tale adventures. By modern standards, Dizzy’s success was a flash in the pan, lasting from 1987 or to 1992, but within that time he starred and featured in a whopping 16 games before fading into obscurity.

Will Dizzy make a comeback? Well, it’s not too likely, but the Oliver Twins uncovered and released two long-lost NES ports of Wonderland Dizzy and Mystery Dizzy in the mid-2010s.

Mario Kart: Double Dash

Yoshi is a real fan favourite, no matter the game you find him in. Sometimes it’s the quest to find and ride him within a Super Mario platformer, other times it’s as a playable character in one of the many Mario sports and party games, or it’s in his very own platforming adventures.

In those whimsical Yoshi platformers – the most recent being Yoshi’s Crafted World – Yoshi can gleefully gobble up enemies and then lay them as eggs to throw at things in the game world. I’m not entirely sure that Nintendo really understand how eggs are made or what their biological purpose is, but let’s not dwell on that too much.

Mario Kart: Double Dash has the distinction of featuring the very best Yoshi egg. This is Yoshi’s special item (shared by Birdo), a giant egg which acts like a homing shell to track down a racer ahead of you, but then breaks and drops more items when it hits them. Perfect for giving your karting duo fresh items to defend your newly captured position!

Sonic the Hedgehog

Now, I know what you’re thinking: “But hedgehogs don’t lay eggs!” But what if I told you that hedgehogs also aren’t blue and they can’t run fast enough to break the sound barrier? Sonic is not a biologically accurate depiction of a hedgehog! But then he’s not the character that’s in the spotlight

Doctor Ivo Robotnik is, in some parts of the world, best know by his nickname ‘Eggman’, given to him for his ovate body and smooth bald head. That’s fed into many of his robotic creations, right up to the Death Star rip-off, the Death Egg that’s been created, destroyed and rebuilt a bunch of times through the Sonic game series.

He might not be the most successful egg on this list, but you’ve got to give Eggman credit for his persistence.

Banjo-Kazooie

Yoshi isn’t the only one to use eggs as a weapon. Perhaps as a sign of weird things to come in Conker’s Bad Fur Day, Banjo-Kazooie lets you learn how to use Blue Eggs as a projectile. Once learnt, Banjo will go prone, allowing his feathered friend Kazooie to fire eggs from her mouth or her butt.

Jak & Daxter (and Uncharted and The Last of Us)

Finally, PlayStation fans get a game to crow about! Jak & Daxter was one of the best platformers of the PlayStation 2 era – the Daxter solo game on PSP was an absolutely fantastic title that deserves more praise – and it featured the egg-like Precursor Orbs as an in-game currency throughout the series. Since then, they’ve reappeared as nice little easter eggs through the Uncharted and The Last of Us games, though now branded as a ‘Strange Relic’.

Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg

Sonic Team didn’t mess around when naming this game – one of their first after Sega went multiplatform. Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg features a character named Billy Hatcher, and he rolls giant eggs around the world in this GameCube exclusive platformer. After proving himself worthy by defending a chick from some mean ravens, Billy’s transported to Morning Land, dons the Legendary Chick Suit and journeys to free the Chicken Elders who have been imprisoned by evil ravens.

An under-appreciated gem from the GameCube era that, sadly, never sold enough for a sequel and might be a bit too niche for a real remaster…

Spyro the Dragon

“Nah-nah-nah-nah-nah!” taunts the egg thief as they dash away from you in Spyro’s platforming games. Don’t you just hate thieves? And not only that, but thieves that are literally stealing unborn dragon babies?

Stardew Valley

There’s plenty of slice-of-life games that we could have included here, but Stardew gets a special mention for having a seasonal egg hunt, and the inclusion of everything from chicken eggs to ostrich, dinosaur, golden and even void eggs. Stardew’s a pretty quirky game, eh?

Final Fantasy XV

This game might have JRPG fans a little divided on how good it is, but there’s no denying that Square Enix made the cooked food look incredibly appetising. Golden Egg Galette, anyone?

Chuckie Egg

And finally, we step back in time even further than Dizzy. Chuckie Egg first came out in 1983, tasking Hen-House Harry with dashing through a level of platforms and ladders to collect a dozen eggs, while avoiding the hens that just laid them. Get to the end of all eight levels in the game, and you’ll be chased back to the start by a giant duck. Obviously.

In Chuckie Egg 2 now Harry has to assemble a legally distinct toy-filled chocolate egg from sugar, milk and cocoa-powder, before delivering it to a dispatch lorry.
