Up until recently, there’s been an overriding focus on the war between mankind and the Daemons of Chaos, featuring factions such as Tzeentch, Khorne, and the human races of Kislev and Grand Cathay.

However, long before the announcement of Total War Warhammer 3 (or the original game, if we’re being honest) fans of the Warhammer tabletop game have been clamouring for the Ogre Kingdoms to make an appearance.

Creative Assembly recently unveiled the Ogres as a playable army, but with one caveat. In order to unlock them you will need to be an early adopter, in the same way that the Warriors of Chaos and Norscan factions were in Warhammer and Warhammer 2.

The Ogre Kingdoms will feature two familiar Legendary Lords including Greasus Goldtooth and Skrag the Slaughterer. The full unit list includes the following:

  • Ogre Tyrant
  • Ogre Slaughtermaster
  • Ogre Hunter
  • Ogre Butcher
  • Ogre Firebelly
  • Gnoblars
  • Gnoblar Trappers
  • Ogre Bulls
  • Ogre Ironguts
  • Ogre Leadbelchers
  • Maneaters
  • Sabertusks
  • Gorgers
  • Giants
  • Stonetusks
  • Mornfang Cavalry
  • Crushers
  • Scraplauncher
  • Ironblaster

It’s evident that plenty of passion for the Warhammer Fantasy tabletop game has gone into recreating the Ogre Kingdoms in Total War.

The developers have also given an overview of how the Ogres will play, outlining their campaign mechanics. Again, this shows how well Creative Assembly knows its Warhammer lore, coming up with a unique ruleset that embodies the insatiable, brutish, and opportunistic tendencies of the Ogre Kingdoms.

A quick glance over these mechanics reveals a heavy emphasis on… meat. Meat is a particularly important resource for the Ogres, offering a slew of campaign and battles bonuses, harvested from the (presumably) dead carcasses of defeated armies.

The Ogre Kingdoms can also establish camps to help them gain a foothold in any territory. Total War Warhammer 3 will also reflect their common status as mercenaries, allowing you to accept contracts from other factions to carry out their dirty work.

Total War Warhammer 3 is now launching on February 22, 2022, and will be coming to PC as well as Game Pass.
