“Turbo Kid” Metroidvania Adaptation Is Coming in 2021

What do you get when you mix Turbo Man, a classic superhero from 1996, and Mega Man, our favorite robot man? Well, you get a kid. But not any kid. You get… Turbo Kid.

What is Turbo Kid?

Turbo Kid is a well-acclaimed film that was released in 2015. The film’s main writers and directors are François Simard, Yoann-Karl Whissell, and Anouk Whissell. The film’s stars include Laurence Leboeuf, Munro Chambers, Aaron Jeffery, and many more.

Unlike traditional superhero films, Turbo Kid has a comedic twist, accompanied by tons of gore. The protagonist of the film is… The Kid. No, seriously. The Kid is a comic book fan, who becomes a superhero out of nowhere.

Turbo Kid follows The Kid’s adventures through the Wastelands, the directors’ take on post-apocalyptic earth set in 1997. In the Wastelands, water is scarce and everything is filled with trash.

Our dear protagonist teams up with a random, mysterious girl who goes by the name of Apple and Frederick, a cowboy who likes arm-wrestling. Their goal is to stop Zeus. No, not the God of Thunder.

Zeus is a tyrant, who has a neat device that turns his captives into water. So he’s pretty similar to the God of Thunder.

The film was a huge hit with critics and film viewers alike. In fact, Rotten Tomatoes has a 91% approval rate for the film, with many characterizing it as “A nostalgic ode to kids’ movies of yesteryear

Metacritic, on the other hand, has a mediocre average of 60/100, along with some mixed reviews.

The film is a bit less than 1.5 hours, so we’d definitely recommend it. Especially now, since its game adaptation is on the horizon.

What is The Turbo Kid Game About?

The Turbo Kid game places you in the shoes of The Kid, in a Metroidvania style game, with The Kid fighting through the Wastelands. The video game studio responsible for the adaptation is Outerminds, who are known for their PewDiePie games.

In the Turbo Kid game, you will pedal… and pedal… and pedal your way through the rubbish-filled Wastelands.

Along with all the pedaling will come tons of gore, as seen on the trailer below.

Outerminds could have created a direct sequel to the film. While it would have been a great idea, it seems that recreating the extremely gory and comedic scenes from the film is better.

Especially when this is done in an 80s style Metroidvania type of game.

But, we’ll have to wait sometime before we get the game in our hands. It’s set to release next year, which is 7 years after the official release of the Turbo Kid movie. This is still less than Rockstar’s video game adaptation of The Warriors (potential idea for another article).

While there isn’t much more than a trailer, you can still visit the official page of the game, or find some fans of the movie on the official Discord server of the Turbo Kid game.

Do you think that the Turbo Kid game will end up being any good? We’re certainly excited to get our hands on it ASAP.

Fun Fact: Le Matos, Turbo Kid’s soundtrack creator, will also work with Outerminds.
