UK Gambling White Paper set to be revealed

The long anticipated Gambling White Paper that will provide proposals to overhaul the current 2005 Gambling Act is set to be revealed to parliament later today, with gambling companies that operate in the UK  likely be glued to their respective television screens to see what effects on their business model in the UK will be as a result.

According to reports publicised by major media outlets including the BBC  and Sky News, as part of the tougher regulations being proposed, gamblers who lose £1,000 or more within a 24 hour period or £2,000 in a 90 day period are expected to face more stringent checks than what are currently being undertaken.

Commenting in The Times newspaper, the Culture Secretary Liz Fraser said: “The internet and the rise of the smartphone means gambling is ubiquitous, not just on the high street but everywhere and anywhere, providing round-the-clock access to betting.”

Fraser who this afternoon will outline the government’s plans, is also likely to introduce several measures for debate including a maximum stake limit online of £2, as well as a mandatory levy on all betting companies that are licensed to operate in the UK.

Highlighting the popularity of smart phones, Fraser has been quoted as saying that ‘now there’s a Las Vegas on every phone.’ With the government’s aim and objective  to provide a balanced proposal which will still allow people to ‘enjoy a flutter.’

As well as the betting companies, gambling reform campaigners will be keenly awaiting the government proposals to restructure and update the 2005 Gambling Act.
