After a down to the wire Game 7 on Sunday, the NBA Finals are now set. The Boston Celtics and Golden State Warriors will begin their pursuit of a championship on Thursday.

There is tons of star power in this series, with Stephen Curry and Jayson Tatum leading the way in the odds for Finals MVP. Steph has actually never won the award though, while Tatum is making his first appearance on the grand stage.

The Warriors are a heavy favorite in the NBA Championship odds as well.

Curry is the frontrunner at +120 odds while Tatum isn’t far behind at +175. The Dubs have opened as a 3.5-point favorite for Game 1 at home.

Can Steph Finally Take Home Finals MVP?

Curry has been historically great in the Finals. He’s averaging 26.5 points, 6.2 assists, and 5.7 rebounds in 28 games but he’s yet to be named MVP. With no Kevin Durant in the mix now, however, this may be Steph’s time to win it. Keep in mind that he just won Magic Johnson Western Conference Finals MVP, too.

The Warriors star is playing well in these playoffs, putting up 25.9 points, 6.2 dimes, and 4.9 boards while shooting 38% from deep. He’s had up and down moments at times, but Curry always tends to show up when the lights are brightest and has played in the Finals countless times before.

If the Warriors are going to win another ring here, Steph will need to be at his absolute best. The Celtics’ defense will undoubtedly stifle him all series long, but Curry is still capable of doing serious damage as he looks to finally capture that Finals MVP.

Tatum in Serious Contention

Tatum has gone from star to superstar over these last couple of seasons and he’s definitely proving it right now. He was just named the Larry Bird Eastern Conference Finals MVP after showing out against Miami, scoring 26 points, and grabbing 10 boards in Game 7.

This is brand new territory for the 24-year-old. However, he’s the heartbeat of this Celtics team and is averaging 27.1 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 5.9 assists in 17 playoff games during Boston’s current run. Tatum is a beast on both ends of the court and has the size and athleticism to not only score the rock at a high level against a smaller Dubs team but also play stout defense. Winning Finals MVP would cap off everything.

The Sleepers

There are a few names bettors must keep in mind when making a pick for this prestigious award.

Andre Iguodala won Finals MVP in 2015 with the Warriors because of his defensive brilliance, only averaging 7.8 points. Marcus Smart, who just won DPOY, is another player who could potentially do the same. He’s obviously more of an offensive weapon than Iggy, but the C’s guard is an absolute pest and he’ll be making it his mission to disrupt the Warriors’ game plan. Plus, Smart is collecting 14.9 points, 6.3 dimes, and 4.2 boards per night in the postseason. A true Swiss Army knife that will play a massive part in this series.

Jaylen Brown is another star who could make some noise. He’s shooting the three at a 39% clip at the moment and putting up 22.9 points per contest. Brown’s contributions alongside Tatum are also crucial to Boston’s success and he’s shown big potential at times on both ends.

Although I initially figured Klay Thompson could be in the mix, Draymond Green is someone you just can’t leave out of this conversation. He is the heart and soul of Golden State and brings so much defensive tenacity and energy to the table. Green winning the Finals MVP would be similar to Iguodala’s in 2015.

Finals MVP Pick

It would be great to see Curry finally capture Finals MVP. That being said, I really like Tatum here. The Celtics are such a fantastic team and they’ve been rolling since January, with their franchise star at the forefront. He’s made big shot after big shot and I really do believe you’re going to see him ball out in the Finals and win it. Steph is phenomenal but Tatum has looked slightly more consistent in the postseason and it’ll make the difference.
