Updated NBA Odds to Win the NBA Championship

In the Eastern Conference, the usual contenders have started off somewhat slowly, with the exception of the Miami Heat. The Milwaukee Bucks have limped out to a 3-4 start, but the upstart New York Knicks have opened 5-1. The Brooklyn Nets are another team looking to get on track, but the continued absence of Kyrie Irving, locked in a quixotic battle with the NBA, the City of New York and the world with respect to COVID-19 vaccination, will keep hurting the team. Let’s take a look at each team’s updated NBA betting odds to win the title next June as well as some thoughts about a few contenders.

The Utah Jazz saw their 5-0 start cool off against Chicago on Saturday night, as Mike Conley rested on the first night of a back-to-back. It’s been 13 seasons since the Jazz started 5-1, and Rudy Gobert is now the first player ever to put up 16 or more points and 14 or more boards in each of a season’s first five games.

The Miami Heat get 25.3 points per game out of Jimmy Butler, and once again, his leadership has the Heat playing with the sort of grit that carries you to wins in the slightly more physical Eastern Conference.

The Brooklyn Nets should be concerned by the start that they are getting out of James Harden. His scoring average is currently 18.7 points per game, the lowest since he was coming off the bench in Oklahoma City ten years ago. He is shooting 39.8% from the field, which would be the worst in his career if it holds for the season. His last two games — 29 points, 8 boards, 8 assists against Indiana and 18 points, 10 boards and 12 assists against Detroit — show that the cold start may be thawing out, though.

Golden State fell to 5-1 when they lost to Memphis. However, Klay Thompson could be on the verge of a return, and they open a stretch of six straight at home. If the team can go on a bit of a run here, the Warriors could build some distance between themselves and some other contenders in an extremely stacked West.

Why are the Milwaukee Bucks struggling right now? Brook Lopez (back) and Jrue Holiday (ankle) did not play all last week. Khris Middleton had to sit out Sunday with an undisclosed illness. Sure, the Bucks still have Giannis, but he can’t score all those points by himself.

The Denver Nuggets had to breathe a sigh of relief after Nikola Jokic’s injured right knee turned into nothing but a bruise. Michael Porter Jr is shooting just 33 percent from the floor, and Jamal Murray is still out, but the Nuggets are winning.

The New York Knicks are another 5-1 team sitting atop the East. Kemba Walker seems to have found his mojo in Gotham, as wins over the 76ers and the Bulls showcased his strengths when running the point alongside Derrick Rose.

The Philadelphia 76ers still have Ben Simmons out, taking a mental health break and trying to get ready to play this season. Joel Embiid’s knee is bothering him. The team did shut down Atlanta on Saturday, getting four steals and three blocks from Matisse Thybulle in 23 minutes coming off the bench. The 76ers can play staunch defense, but as we saw in last season’s playoffs, that offense is still missing something.
