However, a lack of defensive discipline — including neutral zone violations on consecutive plays and blown coverage on checkdown routes — allowed the aging Ben Roethlisberger to lead the Steelers down the field for a game-winning field goal. The Kansas City Chiefs did not see their odds shift at all after a 13-7 win over the Green Bay Packers. Remember that the Packers did not have Aaron Rodgers or Davante Adams. Even so, backup quarterback Jordan Love led a late scoring drive that made this game way too interesting. It showed us a few things about the Chiefs, starting with the fact that if you drop seven or eight into pass coverage and can hurry Patrick Mahomes, he will make mistakes. Teams have done this all year, and now he leads the league in interceptions. The Chiefs also had some bad drops, but until the Chiefs can muster a consistent running game to force teams to load the box, the Chiefs’ offense will continue to struggle. Against quality offenses, their defense still looks like Swiss cheese. So I wouldn’t throw money away on the Chiefs here.

The Dallas Cowboys had an interesting comment from head coach Mike McCarthy in the wake of the team’s 30-16 loss to Denver. The Broncos used a combination of shifting coverages and a stout front seven to shut down the Dallas offense until garbage time — the score was 30-0 going into the fourth quarter, but apparently McCarthy left Dak Prescott on the field for aesthetic purposes — to make the final score more palatable — despite the fact that Prescott missed last week’s game with a calf injury. McCarthy said that he hoped other teams would copy Denver’s approach, which on offense featured a heavy dose of running after the first few series, an approach that Dallas did not have the intestinal fortitude to stop. McCarthy referred to the NFL as a “copycat league,” an apparent taunt at others who might also have noticed two facts about the Dallas defense: you can run on them at will, and you can throw the ball down the field against them. If Dallas doesn’t get turnovers, they struggle to get stops, and these are features that will also make the road to a Super Bowl tough for this team.

The Arizona Cardinals turned to Colt McCoy to lead the offense against San Francisco — and still got the win. The number of teams that McCoy has torched in starts at quarterback continues to grow, and we also saw a bend-but-don’t-break performance from the Cardinals’ defense. That bizarre finish against Green Bay aside, Arizona looks more and more like a dangerous contender as the trials of the long NFL season continue to pile up. If Kyler Murray comes back healthy next week, this is a team that could post a 16-1 record.
