VCU vs Richmond Odds and Picks (Jan. 29)

  • The Richmond Sipders are 2.5-point home favorites over the VCU Rams in an NCAA men’s basketball game scheduled for Saturday, January 29
  • VCU has won three of the past four meetings with Richmond
  • The Rams are also 3-2 straight up in their last five road games against the Spiders

Coming off their biggest win of the season, as they hit the road to face the Richmond Spiders, the VCU Rams don’t appear to be getting a whole of love or respect.

In their last game, the Rams beat #25 Davidson 70-68. The outcome brought to a halt Davidson’s 15-game winning streak, which had been the longest active unbeaten run in the nation.

Richmond is also on a winning streak. The Spiders have won three in a row since suffering a loss at the hands of Davidson.

It’s the hometown Spiders that oddsmakers have established as 2.5-point favorites in this game. Richmond is 0-5 against the spread in the school’s last five home games.

VCU Defense Is Ram Tough

When it comes to stops, the VCU (12-5, 5-2) pulls them all out. The Rams’ defense ranks fifth nationally in effective field goal percentage (.426). They’re also second in turnover percentage (26.8) and second in defensive efficiency (86.2). VCU is also #2 in the country in 3-point defense (.261).

VCU is allowing 58.7 points per game, and opponents are shooting .380.  The Rams are also one of the best teams in the NCAA at forcing enemy mistakes. VCU has finished 33rd or better in college basketball in turnover percentage in nine of the past 10 seasons. VCU has forced 15 or more turnovers in 35 of 44 games since the start of last season.

Spiders Spin Their Way Back Into Games

Richmond (13-7, 4-3) defeated Rhode Island 70-63 on Tuesday after trailing by as many as 15 points in the second half. It was Richmond’s fourth comeback win of 14 or more points this season.

Spiders junior forward Tyler Burton is the only player to rank in the top six in the Atlantic-10 in scoring (fifth at 16.7 points per game) and rebounding (sixth at 7.3 rebounds per game).

VCU vs Richmond Betting Trends

The Rams are 9-2 straight up in the last 11 games and 8-2 ATS over the past 10 games. However, VCU is just 3-7 ATS over the past  10 games at Richmond.

The total has gone over in 10 of the past 14 games between the Spiders and Rams. The over was also the successful play in four of Richmond’s past six games.

Richmond graduate student guard Jason Gilyard and VCU sophomore guard Adrian (Ace) Baldwin Jr are both averaging 3.4 steals per game this season. That’s the most in the NCAA.

Rams vs Spiders Prediction

Richmond’s current three-game run is tied with George Mason for the longest win streak in the conference. It’s also the longest conference win streak by the Spiders since winning their final four Atlantic-10 games in 2019-20.

Richmond is proving to be a much better bet on the road. The Spiders are 6-1 ATS in their last seven games away from home. VCU is also 6-1 ATS as a road team this season.

The Rams own a 55-31 lead in the series. This is including a 68-56 win over the Spiders last season at the Siegel Center. Richmond hasn’t beaten VCU in successive games since 2018.

Pick: VCU Rams +2.5 (-104).
