Western Bulldogs vs Hawthorn Hawks Preview

The Bulldogs are sniffing around a spot in the eight after downing GWS last week, but they’ll be hoping to avoid a similar shootout against a feisty and well-rested Hawthorn outfit on Friday night.

The Hawks prevailed by 27 points when they met the Dogs last year and they too will be hoping to build on some momentum after pushing Collingwood and Fremantle to the brink over the last few weeks.

Sam Mitchell’s side has managed only one win from its last five games, but there have been plenty of positives to take away with some gutsy performances against a few flag contenders.

The Dogs have been a tough side to get a feel for this season, but they could receive a massive boost in the form of key forward Josh Bruce.

Aaron Naughton was enormous last week in the win over the Giants and Bruce’s inclusion would add another weapon for the Hawks to contend with.

Speaking of weapons, much of Hawthorn’s chances depend on the status of Mitch Lewis.

The Hawks are no doubt a much tougher outfit with the youngster up forward, while Jack Gunston’s return from an ankle injury would also be welcome.

Overall, this game should be much closer than the current market suggests, but it’s one the Dogs simply must have.

On paper, the Bulldogs look to have an advantage around the clearances and inside 50 (depending on injuries) and although the Hawks are a tough out, the Dogs should get home late to keep their top-eight hopes alive.
