Despite their biggest players making a huge mark on the footballing world, football teams from Cameroon receive little to no fanfare.

The West African nation has continually produced top stars who have flocked overseas in order to join more established youth setups in Europe to enjoy a successful career. However, that doesn’t mean Cameroonian football isn’t competitive.

The country’s top league, the MTN Elite 1 Championship, is contested by 21 teams and has been around for over 60 years – first founded in 1961. With no less than 17 teams winning the league in its history, there has been no shortage of fascinating stories. But who are some of the most successful football teams in Cameroon?

Who are the most successful football teams in Cameroon?

UMS Loum

One of Cameroon’s modern success stories, UMS Loum have rapidly risen to success. Based in the small city of Loum, Ums have sent shockwaves in the country since they were founded in 2011. Their rapid rise through the ranks saw them steal the headlines by winning the 2015 Cameroon Cup.

From there, Loum upset many more established teams to win the national league twice in quick succession. UMS first won the Elite One title in 2016 before claiming it again in 2019. These rapid wins have made Loum just one of two sides to win multiple Elite One titles in the 21st century.

Union Douala

One of two football teams in the biggest city in Cameroon, Union Douala have always been a title threat no matter what era they have played in. After winning their first title in 1969. Union Douala enjoyed their best form in the 1970s.

Not only did they win the domestic league in both 1976 and 1978, they also were particularly successful in continental competition winning the African Cup of Champions in 1979. More success would follow with a league win in 1990 before their last title would arrive in 2012 – their only win this century. Since then, they have been there or thereabouts in search for their next trophy.

TKC Yaoundé

Based in the Cameroonian capital, TKC Yaoundé have a track record to be proud of. The club dominated their national league in the 1980s winning 5 titles throughout the decade. After securing their first tile in 1981, they would go a hot streak winning back to back Elite One titles in 1983 and 1984.

They would do even better in 1987 winning both the league and the Cameroon Cup – securing a prized double. Their last title would come in 1988 underling their dominance throughout that era. This came at a time when the club was rich in talent with Liberian superstar George Weah leading the line as well as promising talents such as Rigobert Song also lurking in the background. A perennial fixture in the league no matter what era it is.

Canon Yaounde

Despite not quite being the most successful side in domestic terms, no football team from Cameroon have been more successful in continental competition than Canon Yaoundé. Most of this fame was set in the 1970s where Canon won 4 domestic titles. This sent them into the African Cup of Champions where they won the top African club competition three times – in 1971, 1978 and 1980.

This fame carried on into the 1980s where they won four more titles in the 1980s as part of an epic rivalry with Union Douala. Since their last league title in 2002, Canon have not been quite successful but remain one of the nation’s most popular sides thanks to their 10 league triumphs.

Coton Sport

No team has dominated Cameroon football in the past few decades quite like Coton Sport. Based in the northern city of Garoua, Coton have blitzed their rivals ever since winning their first Elite One title in 1997. They were almost unbeatable in the 2000s winning 8 straight titles from 2003-2011 before Union Douala ended the streak in 2012.

They would come back with a vengeance winning five more titles since then including three straight successes from 2013-2015. After claiming their latest title in 2021, Coton are the clear record holders at home with 16 Elite One titles to their name as well as 6 domestic cup wins to their name.
